In the Charsadda area of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Afghanistan-based terrorists, likely ISKP, assassinated prominent JUI-F-linked cleric Sheikh Idrees Turangzai in a hit and run attack outside his seminary. The Fazal-ur-Rehman-led JUI-F party continues to be a prime target for ISKP due to its Deobandi ideology and close relationships with the Afghan Taliban.

A prominent religious cleric, Sheikh Muhammad Idrees Turangzai, was killed by unidentified gunmen in Charsadda district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan’s North Western province. Idrees was affiliated with the Deobandi religious political party, Jamiat Ulema Islam. He had travelled to Afghanistan in 2024 to meet the Taliban Supreme leader Haibatullah Akhunzada to find a solution to Pakistan’s TTP problem. However; multiple Islamic State Khorasan [ISKP] chapter publications had been issuing direct threats against the religious cleric. The political party has been consistently targeted by the group. He had been issued threat alerts by authorities in the recent days as well. Idrees was shot multiple bullets, policemen guarding him have also been injured, a police official said.

Talk of “regime change” in Afghanistan may suit external agendas, but it distracts from the core issue: stability hinges on an inclusive and legitimate political dispensation shaped by Afghans themselves. The Taliban are not apolitical—they reject pluralism and participation. This has limited their domestic and international legitimacy. Without seeking consent or broad inclusion, governance remains narrow, with influence centered between Kandahar (Hibatullah Akhundzada) and Kabul (Sirajuddin Haqqani), but lacking wider political ownership. No durable status quo can rest on exclusion. A system that does not reflect Afghanistan’s diversity risks remaining brittle. Change, therefore, is not a question of “if” but “how.” Whether the Taliban recognize this reality will shape the country’s future trajectory.
