Finished rewatching Sopranos for the first time since it aired and the ending is so much clearer to me than it initially was.
**SPOILERS FOR THE SOPRANOS**
There’s one line in episode 13 of season 6, when Bobby and Tony are fishing.
Discussing death, Bobby says “in our line of work, it’s always out there. You probably don’t even hear it when it happens, right?”
There’s another scene in the next episode which Silvio is at dinner with Gerry and when Gerry is shot, we see blood hit Sil’s face, with no sound and it takes a split second for Sil to even realize what just happened.
With these scenes in mind, the cut to black which made lots of viewers consider whether or not their TV malfunctioned, makes it clear as day that Tony was killed.
It’s also the kind of “ambiguous” which I like - the type where if you rewatch the story with knowledge of the ending in mind, you can see the markers for the answer.
The ambiguity isn’t just an open question, it’s a question with an answer that can be found if you’re paying attention.
The big problem with a lot of “mystery box” stories, is that often, the writers may not have an answer to the question themselves. Instead, they hide their inadequacy behind answering their own question, with another question: “what do YOU think happened?”
The ending of Sopranos may seem like it does this, but the seeds for the answer are there.
At the same time, it spares the audience from a horrific tragedy being the last thing they see. There’s enough slack for the people who want a “happily ever after” for the Soprano family to be able to believe it, if they don’t want to dig in to find the true answer.
Overall, fantastic show - I definitely recommend giving it a rewatch and if you haven’t seen it, but read this whole post anyway, it’s still absolutely worth checking out.
It’s funny, tragic and isn’t afraid to make it clear that some characters, despite being charming and in some ways, sympathetic, are fundamentally evil.
