The Nation of Islam is rightfully credited for its role in developing Malcolm into being who he was. That was the organization which turned him from Detroit Red to Malcolm X. Malcolm continued to credit the NOI with reforming him, even after he became critical of the corruption which he saw taking place in the organization. But Malcolm wasn't a product of the NOI alone. He was raised in a Garveyite household and this influence stayed with him throughout his life, which is why he saw the OAAU as a continuation of Marcus Garvey's work. In his autobiography, Malcolm also mentioned reading books by Carter G. Woodson and W.E.B. Du Bois while he was in prison. He developed into the leader that he did because he was able to build on the foundation which he got from Elijah Muhammad by pulling from other influences.

The Nation of Islam didn't make Malcolm X. Malcolm's destiny was always to be a servant of his people. Had his father, Earl Little, a Garveyite, not been killed. We would've had a more dangerous Malcolm than the one presented by the NOI
