Using the Consumer Credit Panel data, we can measure the inflow & outflow separately by quarter. During the pandemic (Q12020-Q12022), some of the largest *inflows* are to NYC & LA

@ProducerCities Maybe the movie industry helped LA over Orange County during that time period. OC lost a lot of the financial jobs that were involved in the bad loans.

@ProducerCities New York use to get a lot of Puerto Ricians which had higher birth rates than the US in the 1950's now they have lower birth rates than the US. Another Latino stronghold with low birth rates is New Mexico.

@ProducerCities Irvine outpaced LA city during 2010 to 2011. It's a huge suburb that is also urban around 318,000 people now its growing closer to LA since you have less people coming from China and housing is too expensive.

@ProducerCities In fact, since housing for tract houses is not much higher than Staten Island it is getting some population unlike Ventura or Orange County in the west which are losing since they are higher than LA overall for tract housing.

Taking the longer view, the reason New York is losing kids less births. The outmigration story is consistent across decades. After the financial crisis, births did not bounce back as expected.

Good article from @WSJ re declining kids in cities. I went deep on this re NYC a few weeks ago. The reason New York is losing kids is migration. Families are fleeing—primarily to the suburbs. The most popular destination is Nassau County.
