The University of Balamand (UOB) and The Cyprus Institute (CyI) have launched a strategic partnership to strengthen climate research, higher education and science diplomacy across the Eastern Mediterranean. The agreement establishing the Regional Scientific Alliance for Climate Change was signed by Professor Elias Warrak, President of UOB and Professor Stavros Malas, President of CyI, during the University of Balamand’s Commencement Week in July 2026. UOB’s participation in the Alliance, coordinated by the Climate Diplomacy and Sustainable Peace Hub, will promote cooperation in climate science, artificial intelligence, Earth system sciences, water and energy sustainability, graduate education and joint European programmes. The CyI delegation to the UOB, which also included Founding President Professor Costas Papanicolas, participated in high-level academic and diplomatic meetings and environmental site visits. The visit coincided with UOB’s Commencement Ceremony, during which more than 1,400 students graduated and H.E. Sigrid Kaag, Co-Chair of the United Nations Foundation Board of Directors and Member of the International Advisory Council for Gaza Peace Efforts, received an honorary doctorate for her contributions to diplomacy, peacebuilding and sustainable development. The partnership between the two institutions establishes a long-term platform through which universities can advance scientific excellence, support evidence-based policymaking and contribute to a more resilient, sustainable and peaceful Eastern Mediterranean. @StavrosMalasCY

Την Πέμπτη, 2 Ιουλίου, το Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου είχε την τιμή να φιλοξενήσει στις εγκαταστάσεις του τον Πρέσβη της Αραβικής Δημοκρατίας της Αιγύπτου στην Κύπρο, Αξιότιμο κ. Mohamed Zazou. Η συνάντηση πραγματοποιήθηκε στο πλαίσιο της Πρωτοβουλίας για την Κλιματική Αλλαγή στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο και τη Μέση Ανατολή (ΑΜΜΑ). Κατά τη διάρκεια της επίσκεψης, ο Πρόεδρος του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου, Καθηγητής Σταύρος Μαλάς, παρουσίασε το έργο του Ινστιτούτου και τους στόχους της Πρωτοβουλίας. The meeting took place within the framework of the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East Climate Change Initiative. During the visit, the President of The Cyprus Institute, Professor Stavros Malas, presented the Institute’s work and the objectives of the Initiative. This was followed by a constructive exchange of views on issues related to climate change, regional scientific cooperation, and strengthening the resilience of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. Μελέτη στο Nature αποκαλύπτει νέο βασικό μηχανισμό σχηματισμού νεφών με συμβολή του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου Νέα διεθνής μελέτη, που δημοσιεύθηκε στο κορυφαίο επιστημονικό περιοδικό Nature με καθοριστική συμβολή του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου, προσφέρει σημαντικές νέες γνώσεις για τον σχηματισμό των νεφών και τη λειτουργία του κλιματικού συστήματος της Γης. Η έρευνα καταδεικνύει ότι οι φυσικές εκπομπές από τους ωκεανούς επηρεάζουν τον σχηματισμό των νεφών σε πολύ μεγαλύτερο βαθμό απ’ ό,τι θεωρείτο μέχρι σήμερα. Τα ευρήματα συμβάλλουν στην επίλυση μιας μακροχρόνιας ασυμφωνίας μεταξύ παρατηρήσεων της ατμόσφαιρας και κλιματικών μοντέλων και αναμένεται να βελτιώσουν την ακρίβεια των κλιματικών προβλέψεων. Η Δρ Rima Baalbaki, ερευνήτρια στο CARE-C του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου και πρώτη συγγραφέας της μελέτης, σημείωσε ότι η καλύτερη κατανόηση αυτού του μηχανισμού επιτρέπει πιο ολοκληρωμένη κατανόηση της λειτουργίας του κλιματικού συστήματος και συμβάλλει στη βελτίωση της αξιοπιστίας των κλιματικών προβολών. Ο Αναπληρωτής Καθηγητής Δρ Θεόδωρος Χριστούδιας υπογράμμισε ότι τα ευρήματα έχουν ιδιαίτερη σημασία για την Κύπρο και την Ανατολική Μεσόγειο, μία από τις πλέον ευάλωτες περιοχές στην κλιματική αλλαγή, καθώς ενισχύουν την ικανότητα προετοιμασίας και προσαρμογής στις επιπτώσεις της. The research shows that natural ocean emissions play a greater role in cloud formation than previously understood. The findings help explain longstanding differences between atmospheric observations and climate model predictions and are expected to improve the accuracy of future climate projections. Dr. Rima Baalbaki, researcher at the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center (CARE-C) of The Cyprus Institute and first author of the study, noted that a better understanding of this mechanism allows scientists to gain a clearer picture of how the climate system operates and to improve the reliability of climate projections. Associate Professor Dr. Theodoros Christoudias highlighted that these findings are particularly important for Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean, one of the regions most vulnerable to climate change, as they contribute to strengthening preparedness and resilience. Στις 25 Ιουνίου 2026, η Ομάδα Εργασίας για τις Τηλεπικοινωνίες και την Κοινωνία της Πληροφορίας επισκέφθηκε το Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου. Η επίσκεψη διοργανώθηκε σε συνεργασία με το Υφυπουργείο Έρευνας, Καινοτομίας και Ψηφιακής Πολιτικής στο πλαίσιο της Κυπριακής Προεδρίας του Συμβουλίου της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης, με στόχο την ανάδειξη των δυνατοτήτων, πρωτοβουλιών και υποδομών της Κύπρου στον ψηφιακό τομέα. The visit was organized in collaboration with the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy in the context of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union, with the aim of showcasing Cyprus’s capabilities, initiatives, and infrastructure in the digital domain. During the visit, presentations were delivered by the President of the Institute, Professor Stavros Malas, and the Director of Research and Technical Support, Dr. Vasilis Tsakalos. The presentations were followed by a tour of the Institute’s state-of-the-art facilities, including the Virtual Environment Laboratory (VeLAB), the Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL) and the High-performance computing (HPC) Center, offering visitors a comprehensive overview of the Institute’s research capabilities. Στις 21 Ιουνίου 2026, στο Κάιρο, το Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου και το Κέντρο Περιβάλλοντος και Ανάπτυξης για την Αραβική Περιοχή και την Ευρώπη (CEDARE) υπέγραψαν Μνημόνιο Συναντίληψης (MoU) για διμερή συνεργασία, παράλληλα με τη Διακήρυξη για την ίδρυση της Περιφερειακής Επιστημονικής Συμμαχίας για την Κλιματική Αλλαγή. Η σημαντική αυτή εξέλιξη αναπτύσσεται στο πλαίσιο της Πρωτοβουλίας για την Κλιματική Αλλαγή στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο και τη Μέση Ανατολή (EMME-CCI), μιας πρωτοβουλίας της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας, την οποία συντονίζει το Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου, και προωθεί την περιφερειακή συνεργασία μέσω της επιστήμης, του διαλόγου πολιτικής και της θεσμικής συνεργασίας. This milestone is developed under the Climate Change Initiative for the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (EMME-CCI), an Initiative of the Government of Cyprus coordinated by The Cyprus Institute, which promotes regional collaboration through science, policy dialogue, and institutional cooperation. The Regional Scientific Alliance reinforces a shared commitment to advancing scientific cooperation, supporting evidence-based policymaking, and developing practical solutions to climate challenges across the EMME region. Πραγματοποιήθηκε την Παρασκευή 19 Ιουνίου 2026 στο Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου η τελετή εγκαινίων της νέας εθνικής ερευνητικής υποδομής BioMERAplusCHEM, ενός υπερσύγχρονου ερευνητικού συστήματος ανοικτής πρόσβασης που αναμένεται να ενισχύσει καθοριστικά την επιστημονική έρευνα, την καινοτομία και τη συνεργασία μεταξύ ακαδημαϊκής κοινότητας, επιχειρήσεων και δημόσιων φορέων. Η νέα υποδομή αποτελεί σημαντική επένδυση για την Κύπρο και δημιουργεί νέες προοπτικές στους τομείς της υγείας, της ενέργειας, της βιομηχανίας, της τεχνολογίας τροφίμων, της βιοεπιστήμης και της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς, παρέχοντας προηγμένες δυνατότητες χημικής ανάλυσης και απεικόνισης δειγμάτων με εξαιρετικά υψηλή ευκρίνεια. This state-of-the-art open-access research facility is expected to significantly strengthen scientific research, innovation, and collaboration among academia, industry, and public-sector organizations. The new infrastructure represents a major investment for Cyprus and opens new opportunities in the fields of health, energy, industry, food technology, life sciences, and cultural heritage by providing advanced capabilities for chemical analysis and imaging of samples at exceptionally high resolution. BioMERAplusCHEM enables the detailed analysis of an exceptionally wide range of samples, covering applications that extend from advanced materials, geological specimens, and cultural heritage objects to electronic circuit boards, human, animal, and plant tissues, battery components, and many other specialized material categories. The event was attended by the President of The Cyprus Institute, Dr Stavros Malas, the Chief Scientist of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Demetris Skourides, and distinguished guests, who had the opportunity to learn about the capabilities and applications of the new infrastructure. Στις 8 Μαΐου 2026, η Ομάδα Εργοδοτών της Ευρωπαϊκής Οικονομικής και Κοινωνικής Επιτροπής (ΕΟΚΕ) επισκέφθηκε το Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου. Κατά τη διάρκεια της επίσκεψης, πραγματοποιήθηκαν παρουσιάσεις από τον Πρόεδρο του Ινστιτούτου, Καθηγητή Σταύρο Μαλά, και τον Διευθυντή του Ερευνητικού Κέντρου Ενέργειας, Περιβάλλοντος και Υδάτινων Πόρων, Καθηγητή Θεόδωρο Ζαχαριάδη. Ακολούθησε ξενάγηση στις εγκαταστάσεις του Ινστιτούτου, συμπεριλαμβανομένων του Εργαστηρίου Χαρακτηρισμού Τέχνης «Δρ. Ανδρέας Πίττας», του Εργαστηρίου Μη Επανδρωμένων Συστημάτων (USRL), καθώς και του Εργαστηρίου Θερμικής Αποθήκευσης Ενέργειας (TESLAB), προσφέροντας στους επισκέπτες μια ολοκληρωμένη εικόνα των ερευνητικών δυνατοτήτων του οργανισμού. ------ On 8 May 2026, the Employer’s Group of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), visited the Cyprus Institute. During the visit, presentations were delivered by the President of the Institute, Professor Stavros Malas, and the Director of the Energy, Environment and Water Research Centre Professor Theodoros Zachariades. The presentations were followed by a tour of the Institute’s state-of-the-art facilities, including, the Andreas Pittas Art Characterization Laboratories, the Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL) and the Thermal Energy Storage Lab (TESLAB), offering visitors a comprehensive overview of the Institute’s research capabilities. @StavrosMalasCY

Με ιδιαίτερη χαρά, την Τρίτη 12 Μαΐου, το Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου υποδέχθηκε τον νέο Αντιπρόεδρο του Φορέα Διασφάλισης και Πιστοποίησης της Ποιότητας της Ανώτερης Εκπαίδευσης (ΔΙΠΑΕ), Καθ. Ανδρέα Αναγιωτό. Κατά τη διάρκεια της συνάντησης πραγματοποιήθηκε παρουσίαση του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου και των εκπαιδευτικών του δραστηριοτήτων από τον Πρόεδρο του Ινστιτούτου και τη Διευθύντρια της Σχολής Μεταπτυχιακών Σπουδών, ενώ ακολούθησε εποικοδομητική συζήτηση γύρω από θέματα ανώτερης εκπαίδευσης και διασφάλισης ποιότητας. Ο Αντιπρόεδρος του ΔΙΠΑΕ ξεναγήθηκε επίσης σε ερευνητικά εργαστήρια και υποδομές του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου. ----- With great pleasure, on Tuesday, 12 May, The Cyprus Institute welcomed the new Vice President of the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education (CYQAA), Professor Andreas Anayiotos. During the meeting, a presentation of The Cyprus Institute and its educational activities was delivered by the President of the Institute and the Head of the Graduate School, followed by a constructive discussion on matters around higher education and quality assurance. Isotopic Perspectives on Exchange in Ancient Southwest Asia was presented by Dr. Kristina A. Franke, Postdoctoral Researcher at Ruhr University Bochum and associate of the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum and the University of New England, Australia. 📅 22 April 2026 Stable Isotope Fingerprinting: Tracing Mobility, Diet, and Human–Material Interactions in the Ancient World was delivered by Dr. Dafni Kyropoulou, Research Associate at the Stable Isotope Unit, Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, NCSR Demokritos. 📅 23 April 2026 Communities of Practice in Bronze Age and Early Iron Age Metallurgy Across Southeastern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean was presented by Dr. Vana Orfanou, Archaeological Scientist at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.
