Με ιδιαίτερη χαρά, την Τρίτη 12 Μαΐου, το Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου υποδέχθηκε τον νέο Αντιπρόεδρο του Φορέα Διασφάλισης και Πιστοποίησης της Ποιότητας της Ανώτερης Εκπαίδευσης (ΔΙΠΑΕ), Καθ. Ανδρέα Αναγιωτό. Κατά τη διάρκεια της συνάντησης πραγματοποιήθηκε παρουσίαση του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου και των εκπαιδευτικών του δραστηριοτήτων από τον Πρόεδρο του Ινστιτούτου και τη Διευθύντρια της Σχολής Μεταπτυχιακών Σπουδών, ενώ ακολούθησε εποικοδομητική συζήτηση γύρω από θέματα ανώτερης εκπαίδευσης και διασφάλισης ποιότητας. Ο Αντιπρόεδρος του ΔΙΠΑΕ ξεναγήθηκε επίσης σε ερευνητικά εργαστήρια και υποδομές του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου. ----- With great pleasure, on Tuesday, 12 May, The Cyprus Institute welcomed the new Vice President of the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education (CYQAA), Professor Andreas Anayiotos. During the meeting, a presentation of The Cyprus Institute and its educational activities was delivered by the President of the Institute and the Head of the Graduate School, followed by a constructive discussion on matters around higher education and quality assurance. 📢 The One Archaeological Science Seminar Series on Interdisciplinary Studies in Archaeological Science – Use of Isotopes successfully brought together researchers and scholars to explore new perspectives on mobility, exchange, metallurgy, and human–material interactions through cutting-edge archaeological science research. 📅 21 April 2026 Invisible Networks? Isotopic Perspectives on Exchange in Ancient Southwest Asia was presented by Dr. Kristina A. Franke, Postdoctoral Researcher at Ruhr University Bochum and associate of the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum and the University of New England, Australia. 📅 22 April 2026 Stable Isotope Fingerprinting: Tracing Mobility, Diet, and Human–Material Interactions in the Ancient World was delivered by Dr. Dafni Kyropoulou, Research Associate at the Stable Isotope Unit, Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, NCSR Demokritos. 📅 23 April 2026 Communities of Practice in Bronze Age and Early Iron Age Metallurgy Across Southeastern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean was presented by Dr. Vana Orfanou, Archaeological Scientist at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. Ο Υπουργός Ενέργειας, Εμπορίου και Βιομηχανίας, Μιχάλης Δαμιανός επισκέφθηκε τη Μονάδα Ενεργειακών Τεχνολογιών «ΠΡΩΤΕΑΣ» του Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου στο Πεντάκωμο, εκφράζοντας την ικανοποίησή του για το σημαντικό έργο που επιτελείται στους τομείς των ανανεώσιμων πηγών ενέργειας και της αποθήκευσης ενέργειας. Τόνισε ιδιαίτερα τη σημασία ανάπτυξης καινοτόμων λύσεων αποθήκευσης πέρα από τις μπαταρίες και διαβεβαίωσε ότι το κράτος θα στηρίξει σχετικά ερευνητικά προγράμματα, τα οποία θεωρούνται κρίσιμα για την Κύπρο. Ο Πρόεδρος του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου, Σταύρος Μαλάς ανέφερε ότι ο «ΠΡΩΤΕΑΣ» αποτελεί πρότυπο βιώσιμου ενεργειακού οικοσυστήματος για την Κύπρο. Συνδυάζει την παραγωγή ενέργειας, αποθήκευση και την συμπαραγωγή αφαλατωμένου νερού. Αποκάλυψε ότι στα πλαίσια ενός μεγάλου Ευρωπαϊκού Προγράμματος Interreg που μόλις χρηματοδοτήθηκε, σύντομα θα εγκατασταθεί και θα τεθεί σε εφαρμογή μια καινοτόμα μονάδα για γεωργική χρήση που θα αξιοποιεί την ηλιακή ενέργεια και την χρήση αφαλατωμένου νερού καθώς και την περαιτέρω αξιοποίηση της άλμης. Κατά τη διάρκεια της επίσκεψης, ο Υπουργός ενημερώθηκε επίσης για το έργο που επιτελείται σχετικά με λύσεις για τον μετριασμό και την προσαρμογή στην κλιματική αλλαγή, τη βιωσιμότητα, καθώς και για τις προκλήσεις που σχετίζονται με την ενέργεια, το νερό, την επισιτιστική ασφάλεια και τις περιβαλλοντικές πιέσεις. ---- The Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, Michalis Damianos, visited the “PROTEAS” Energy Technologies Facility of the Cyprus Institute in Pentakomo, expressing his satisfaction with the important work being carried out in the fields of renewable energy sources and energy storage. He particularly emphasized the importance of developing innovative storage solutions beyond batteries and assured that the government will support related research programs, which are considered crucial for Cyprus. The President of the Cyprus Institute, Stavros Malas, stated that “PROTEAS” serves as a model of a sustainable energy ecosystem for Cyprus. It combines energy production, energy storage, and the cogeneration of desalinated water. He also announced that within the framework of a European Interreg Programme that has just been funded, an innovative greenhouse unit for agricultural use will soon be installed and put into operation. The unit will utilize solar energy, desalinated water, and the further valorization of brine for agriculture purposes. During the visit, the Minister was also informed about the work carried out on climate change mitigation and adaptation solutions, sustainability, and challenges related to energy, water, food security, and environmental pressures. @StavrosMalasCY

👉Στις 16 Απριλίου 2026, πραγματοποιήθηκε επίσκεψη των Μόνιμων Αντιπροσώπων των Ευρωπαϊκών χωρών για θέματα  Έρευνας και Καινοτομίας με έδρα τις Βρυξέλλες, στο Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου. Η επίσκεψη διοργανώθηκε σε συνεργασία με το Υφυπουργείο Έρευνας, Καινοτομίας και Ψηφιακής Πολιτικής στο πλαίσιο της Κυπριακής Προεδρίας του Συμβουλίου της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης, με στόχο την ανάδειξη του εθνικού οικοσυστήματος έρευνας, καινοτομίας και τεχνολογίας. Κατά τη διάρκεια της επίσκεψης, πραγματοποιήθηκαν παρουσιάσεις από τον Πρόεδρο του Ινστιτούτου, Kαθηγητή Σταύρο Μαλά και τον Διευθυντή του Κέντρου Έρευνας για το Κλίμα και την Ατμόσφαιρα (CARE-C), Καθηγητή Jean Sciare, αναδεικνύοντας τις καινοτόμες δράσεις και τη συμβολή του ΙΚυ σε ζητήματα που αφορούν την Ανατολική Μεσόγειο και την Μέση Ανατολή. Ακολούθησε ξενάγηση στις εγκαταστάσεις του Ινστιτούτου, συμπεριλαμβανομένων του Κέντρου Υπολογιστή Υψηλής Απόδοσης (HPC), του Εργαστηρίου Χαρακτηρισμού Τέχνης «Δρ. Ανδρέας Πίττας», καθώς και του Εργαστηρίου Μη Επανδρωμένων Συστημάτων (USRL), προσφέροντας στους επισκέπτες μια ολοκληρωμένη εικόνα των ερευνητικών δυνατοτήτων του οργανισμού. Η δράση αυτή αποτελεί σημαντικό βήμα για την ενίσχυση της διεθνούς συνεργασίας και την προβολή της Κύπρου ως περιφερειακού κόμβου αριστείας στην έρευνα και την καινοτομία. ----- 👉On 16 April 2026, the Permanent Representatives of Member States to the European Union for matters of Research and Innovation, visited the Cyprus Institute. The visit was organized in collaboration with the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy in the context of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union, with the aim of showcasing the national ecosystem of research, innovation, and technology. During the visit, presentations were delivered by the President of the Institute, Professor Stavros Malas, and the Director of the Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C), Professor Jean Sciare, highlighting the Institute’s innovative initiatives and its contribution to issues concerning the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. The presentations were followed by a tour of the Institute’s state-of-the-art facilities, including the High-performance computing (HPC) Center, the Andreas Pittas Art Characterization Laboratories, and the Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL), offering visitors a comprehensive overview of the Institute’s research capabilities. Η κλιματική κρίση είναι και κρίση των ωκεανών διαμηνύει ο Κώστας Καδής Την ανάγκη για άμεση, συντονισμένη και επιστημονικά τεκμηριωμένη δράση απέναντι στις επιπτώσεις της κλιματικής αλλαγής στις θάλασσες και τις παράκτιες κοινότητες ανέδειξε ο Ευρωπαίος Επίτροπος για την Αλιεία και τους Ωκεανούς, Κώστας Καδής, κατά την παρέμβασή του στο Διεθνές Συνέδριο με τίτλο «Δράση για το Κλίμα στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο και τη Μέση Ανατολή: Ενίσχυση της Περιφερειακής Συνεργασίας μέσω της Επιστήμης και της Καινοτομίας». Ο Δρ. Καδής υπογράμμισε ότι «η κλιματική κρίση είναι και κρίση των ωκεανών», προειδοποιώντας ότι η αύξηση της θερμοκρασίας και η οξίνιση των υδάτων απειλούν άμεσα τη βιοποικιλότητα και την οικονομία της περιοχής. Κλείνοντας, απηύθυνε έκκληση για συλλογική δράση και αξιοποίηση της επιστημονικής διπλωματίας ως τον μόνο δρόμο για τη διασφάλιση ανθεκτικών θαλάσσιων οικοσυστημάτων. --- The climate crisis is also an ocean crisis, says Kostas Kadis The urgent need for immediate, coordinated and science-based action to address the impacts of climate change on seas and coastal communities was highlighted by the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Dr. Kostas Kadis, during his address at the International Conference titled “Climate Action in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East: Strengthening Regional Cooperation through Science and Innovation”. Speaking in Nicosia (8–9 April 2026), Dr. Kadis warned that "the climate crisis is also an ocean crisis," noting that rising temperatures and marine heatwaves are already transforming ecosystems and threatening the sustainability of the region. He called for strengthened regional cooperation and the effective use of scientific knowledge to secure resilient marine environments and sustainable communities for future generations. @StavrosMalasCY

Δράση για το Κλίμα στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο και τη Μέση Ανατολή: Περιφερειακή Συνεργασία με τη στήριξη της Επιστήμης και της Καινοτομίας Η Κύπρος Αναλαμβάνει Ηγετικό Ρόλο προς ένα Βιώσιμο Μέλλον Η Κύπρος αναδεικνύεται σε πρωταγωνιστή της παγκόσμιας δράσης για το κλίμα, φιλοξενώντας στη Λευκωσία (8-9 Απριλίου 2026) το Διεθνές Συνέδριο «Δράση για το Κλίμα στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο και τη Μέση Ανατολή». Υπό την αιγίδα της Κυπριακής Προεδρίας του Συμβουλίου της ΕΕ και τη συνδιοργάνωση του Υφυπουργείου Έρευνας, Καινοτομίας και Ψηφιακής Πολιτικής και της Συντονιστικής Επιτροπής της Πρωτοβουλίας για την Κλιματική Αλλαγή στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο και Μέση Ανατολή (ΑΜΜΑ), το συνέδριο συγκεντρώνει ηγέτες, επιστήμονες και διπλωμάτες. Ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας, κ. OneArchSci: Training Visits at KU Leuven Dr. Artemios Oikonomou (Research Affiliate) and Dr. Angela Celauro (Post-Doctoral Research Fellow) recently completed a training visit at KU Leuven (9–13 March 2026), under the supervision of Dr. Carina Gerritzen. The training focused on the preparation of archaeological glass for Sr–Nd isotopic analysis, including clean lab procedures, acid digestion, and ion-exchange chromatography. Hands-on work emphasized precision and contamination control. This experience further strengthens OneArchSci’s capacity in advanced archaeometric analysis and isotopic approaches to studying ancient glass provenance. 🙏 Many thanks to Prof. Patrick Degryse and Dr. Carina Gerritzen for their guidance and warm hospitality. Το Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου (ΙΚυ) συμμετείχε στο Συνέδριο India–Cyprus Business & Investment Summit 2026: Transforming Tomorrow, το οποίο διοργανώθηκε από την Ύπατη Αρμοστεία της Ινδίας στη Λευκωσία. Το Συνέδριο αποτέλεσε σημείο συνάντησης ηγετικών στελεχών και θεσμικών παραγόντων από την Ινδία και την Κύπρο, με στόχο τη διερεύνηση ευκαιριών συνεργασίας σε στρατηγικούς τομείς, δίνοντας ιδιαίτερη έμφαση στη μετατροπή του διαλόγου σε απτά αποτελέσματα. Prof. Stavros Malas, President of the Cyprus Institute, participated in the panel discussion on “Technology and Innovation”, highlighting Cyprus’ growing role as a regional hub for advanced research, computational sciences, climate science, and cutting-edge innovation in the Eastern Mediterranean. He also underscored the Institute’s focus to strengthening research-driven partnerships that connect Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean, and India. He made a special reference to the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East Climate Change Initiative (EMME-CCI), emphasizing the leading role of the Cyprus Institute in promoting regional scientific collaboration, and highlighting the opportunities arising from climate change, both at a scientific and investment level,  in supporting projects that enhance climate resilience. @StavrosMalasCY

👉Training Workshop: Mobility and Landscape Use – an Isotopic Approach On 17–18 February 2026, we had the pleasure of hosting the training workshop “Mobility and Landscape Use – an Isotopic Approach”, delivered by Christophe Snoeck, Research Professor at Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Head of the Brussels Bioarchaeology Lab. Held in person at The Cyprus Institute, the workshop brought together researchers and students interested in archaeological science and isotopic methods. The sessions introduced the use of isotopic approaches—particularly strontium isotopes—to investigate human and animal mobility and landscape use in archaeology. Participants explored the theoretical basis of isotopic provenancing, sampling strategies, and data interpretation, as well as the challenges and limitations of this approach. A large section was dedicated to the study of cremated bone and the specific challenges these materials present for isotope analyses. The workshop also included an overview of how strontium baselines are created and presented case studies from different archaeological contexts. Με μεγάλη επιτυχία πραγματοποιήθηκε την Τετάρτη, 25 Φεβρουαρίου 2026, στο Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου η Τελετή Έναρξης του Διεθνούς Συνεδρίου «Το Σύμπλεγμα Νερού, Ενέργειας, Τροφίμων, Οικοσυστημάτων (WEFE NEXUS) στη Μεσογειακή Διαδρομή – Από τη Στρατηγική στη Δράση». Το Συνέδριο ανέδειξε τις αλληλένδετες προκλήσεις που αντιμετωπίζει η Μεσόγειος – λειψυδρία, ενεργειακή μετάβαση, επισιτιστική ασφάλεια και κλιματική αλλαγή – προωθώντας ολοκληρωμένες και ρεαλιστικές λύσεις για τη βιώσιμη διαχείριση των φυσικών πόρων. Ο Πρόεδρος του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου, Σταύρος Μαλάς, προειδοποίησε για τις σοβαρές επιπτώσεις της κλιματικής αλλαγής στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο, ενώ η Επίτροπος Περιβάλλοντος Αντωνία Θεοδοσίου τόνισε ότι η πραγματική πρόκληση δεν είναι μόνο η στρατηγική, αλλά η αποτελεσματική υλοποίησή της μέσα από ένα αξιόπιστο και μετρήσιμο πλαίσιο δράσης. Το Συνέδριο εστιάζει στην ενίσχυση της συνεργασίας μεταξύ κυβερνήσεων, επιστημονικής κοινότητας και χρηματοδοτικών φορέων, με στόχο τη διαμόρφωση και εφαρμογή ενός ολοκληρωμένου Πλαισίου Δράσης για τη διασφάλιση νερού, τροφίμων και ενέργειας με σεβασμό στο περιβάλλον και έμφαση στην κλιματική ανθεκτικότητα. Η διοργάνωση εντάσσεται στο έργο WEFE4MED – Community of Practice, το οποίο συντονίζει το Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου, συμβάλλοντας στη δημιουργία μιας ισχυρής Κοινότητας Πρακτικής στη Μεσόγειο και στη χάραξη κοινής στρατηγικής για ένα βιώσιμο μέλλον. Το Συνέδριο ολοκληρώθηκε με την παρουσίαση της Διακήρυξης της Λευκωσίας, σηματοδοτώντας την έναρξη της περιφερειακής διαδικασίας διαβούλευσης για την ανάπτυξη του Πλαισίου Δράσης WEFE Nexus και ενισχύοντας την Κοινότητα Πρακτικής WEFE Nexus ως βασική πλατφόρμα για τη μετατροπή της γνώσης σε πράξη.

👉Την Πέμπτη, 19 Φεβρουαρίου, πραγματοποιήθηκε συνάντηση μεταξύ του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου (ΙΚυ) και του Επαρχιακού Οργανισμού Αυτοδιοίκησης Λευκωσίας (ΕΟΑ). Η ηγεσία του ΕΟΑ Λευκωσίας, με επικεφαλής τον Πρόεδρο κ. Κωνσταντίνο Γιωρκάτζη, επισκέφθηκε το Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου και συναντήθηκε με μέλη της διοίκησης του ΙΚυ, υπό τον Προέδρο του, Καθ. Σταύρο Μαλά. Κατά τη διάρκεια της συνάντησης συζητήθηκαν προοπτικές συνεργασίας μεταξύ των δύο οργανισμών, με στόχο την ενίσχυση της θεσμικής συνέργειας και την προώθηση πρωτοβουλιών με ουσιαστικό κοινωνικό αντίκτυπο. Οι δύο αντιπροσωπίες συμφώνησαν να εγκαινιάσουν δομημένο διάλογο, με σκοπό τη λεπτομερή αποτύπωση των αναγκών του ΕΟΑ και τη διερεύνηση συγκεκριμένων τρόπων συνεργασίας με επιστήμονες και ομάδες του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου. ----- 👉On Thursday, 19 February, a meeting took place between The Cyprus Institute (CyI) and the Nicosia District Local Government Organisation (EOA). The leadership of EOA Nicosia, headed by its President Mr. Konstantinos Yiorkadjis, visited The Cyprus Institute and met with members of CyI’s management, led by its President, Professor Stavros Malas. During the meeting, the two organisations explored opportunities for collaboration aimed at strengthening institutional cooperation and advancing initiatives with meaningful societal impact.
