Firstly, Ethiopia is under US sanctions while Vietnam is not. And speaking of former French colonies, Haiti was the first to get independence (1804) and is still one of the poorest countries in the world because of the debt they had to take on to gain independence (it took them until 1947 to fully repay it!). Whereas, New Caledonia is still a French colony and is neither rich nor poor. "If colonialism were the answer to why Africa is poor..." This line completely ignores the European powers' (and US) post-colonial control over Africa. Patrice Lumumba, the first democratically elected leader of the DRC, was tortured and killed by Belgium and the US for being a nationalist. His body was dissolved in acid so he wouldn't become a martyr. His legacy is largely unknown even within the continent. Several other such "lessons" were meted out. Google Thomas Sankara (Burkina Faso) and Sylvanus Olympio (Togo). Once you set the example, you gain obedience. The VietCong, on the other hand, didn't surrender even though 3 million Vietnamese died during the war, and several thousand more continue to die to this day (!) from Agent Orange exposure. As for former French colonies in Africa, France still controls their currency and holds their central bank reserves in France. As Rothschild purportedly said, "permit me to issue and control the money of a nation, and I care not who makes its laws." Third, the borders in Africa were drawn in such a way that conflict was inevitable. At the Berlin Conference in 1884-85, the European powers simply carved up the continent by drawing straight line borders. African leaders were conspicuous only by their absence at this historic event which shaped the next century. This is why Cameroon, a French-speaking country, has a minority English-speaking territory, ensuring it remains destabilized. Likewise for West Asia/the Middle East, where the Sykes-Picot legacy lives on. @magattew conflates formal colonial rule with colonial control. Vietnam managed to fully kick out both France and the US, reunified the North and the South, and kept its sovereignty. All African leaders who attempted the same have been systematically eliminated (see Muammar Gaddafi, Libya's divisive leader, for a recent example), ensuring Africa forever bears the open wounds of its colonial legacy. But Ms. Wade is right on one thing: Vietnam owes its prosperity to overcoming colonial rule. Maybe Africa can become prosperous if Africans do the same.
Magatte Wade@magattew

Ethiopia was never colonized. For much of its history, it was one of the poorest countries on the continent. Meanwhile, Vietnam was colonized by the French, devastated by decades of war, and is now on its way to serious economic prosperity. If colonialism were the answer to why Africa is poor, Ethiopia should be rich and Vietnam should be broke. Neither is true. Can we please retire this excuse?

The word "Shari'a" is what they don't want to hear, not their fault. It is a result of what they were taught in their Sunday schools. It is not easy to change a childhood mindset. Deliberate misinformation, wrong programming. Anything Islam has to be fought blindly.

Putting the Question of Sharīʿah in Yorùbá Land in Proper Perspective Much of the controversy surrounding Sharīʿah in Yorùbá land is driven more by fear, misinformation and politics than by a proper understanding of what is actually being requested by Muslims. The first point that must be clearly stated is that a full-fledged Sharīʿah legal system, in the sense of a comprehensive state-wide Islamic legal order governing criminal, civil and public affairs, is neither practical nor presently attainable in the multicultural and multi-religious context of Yorùbá land. The demographic realities, constitutional framework and religious diversity of the Southwest make such a project unrealistic. Indeed, the overwhelming majority of Muslims advocating for Sharīʿah are not calling for the establishment of an Islamic state, nor are they demanding the replacement of existing constitutional structures with a comprehensive Islamic legal system. What many Muslims have consistently requested is something far more limited, reasonable and constitutionally defensible: the opportunity to voluntarily access Islamic legal provisions in matters that directly concern their religious obligations and personal lives. These include areas such as: - Marriage and divorce. - Inheritance and estate administration. - Family disputes. - Endowments (waqf). - Contracts and certain aspects of personal transactions. - Religious mediation and arbitration. These are matters in which Muslims already believe they are religiously bound by Islamic teachings. The demand is therefore not for the imposition of Sharīʿah upon non-Muslims but for the accommodation of Muslims who voluntarily wish to regulate aspects of their personal affairs according to their faith. This is neither unusual nor unprecedented. Across the world, plural societies provide mechanisms through which religious communities can resolve personal and family matters according to their traditions, provided such arrangements operate within the framework of the law and with the consent of the parties involved. Viewed from this perspective, Sharīʿah Panels are not instruments of domination but mechanisms of religious accommodation. They are comparable to mediation and arbitration systems through which citizens voluntarily seek guidance and dispute resolution based on shared values and beliefs. The intense opposition to even these limited arrangements raises important questions. If Christians may organise their affairs according to Christian principles, and if practitioners of traditional religion may organise aspects of their communal and religious lives according to their convictions, on what basis should Muslims be denied the opportunity to seek guidance on inheritance, marriage, divorce and related matters from institutions grounded in Islamic law? To oppose a full Islamic legal state is one thing. To oppose Muslims having access to voluntary Sharīʿah-based mediation and personal law mechanisms is something entirely different. The latter begins to resemble a systematic denial of the legitimate religious rights of Muslims. Equally troubling is the recurring attempt to portray every discussion about Sharīʿah as a "Fulani agenda" or an externally inspired project. Such claims are historically inaccurate, intellectually weak and socially divisive. Islam did not arrive in Yorùbá land through Fulani people. Yorùbá Muslims are not recent converts. They are indigenous sons and daughters of the soil whose ancestors have practised Islam for centuries. The desire of a Yorùbá Muslim to distribute his estate according to Islamic inheritance law, contract his marriage according to Islamic principles or resolve family disputes according to Islamic teachings has nothing to do with Fulani nationalism, Fulani expansionism or any external ethnic agenda. It is simply the desire of a believer to practise his religion. 1/2

@CzarrRichard @OurBridals Each state has the right to enforce its laws. Lagos banned Okada because it is not safe and for security, among other reasons. So, when Kano State government created hisbah, and banning alcohol is a way they think they can restore sanity. Has nothing to do with Shari'a

STOP IT The strength of an economy is not determined by its exchange rate. An exchange rate is simply the price of a currency. A few examples prove this: 1. Japan is the world’s fourth-largest economy with a GDP of over $4 trillion, yet the Japanese Yen trades at roughly 140–160 Yen to 1 US Dollar. 2. South Korea has a GDP of around $1.8 trillion, but its currency trades at about 1,300–1,400 Won to 1 US Dollar. 3. Vietnam’s economy exceeds $500 billion, despite an exchange rate of roughly 25,000 Dong to 1 US Dollar. 4. On the other hand, Kuwait has one of the world’s strongest currencies (about 0.31 Kuwaiti Dinar per US Dollar), but its economy is much smaller than Japan’s or Germany’s. What determines an economy is its GDP, productivity, industrial output, exports, employment, and human capital; not the exchange rate. In fact, many successful export economies maintain relatively weaker currencies to stay competitive. Nigeria needs a weak currency to boost its exports and this approach has improved our trade balance in the last three years.

On this Sharia issue I personally have no problem with it. The problem has always been the implementation. The implementation ends up stifling the environment for non practicing Muslims Except you want to tell me that the Northern states in Nigeria will have to expel all the Christians living there which is impossible Sharia law is easy and smooth to implement in climes where you have at least 95% Muslims living there and there are not up to 3 states in Nigeria with an Islamic population of even 90%. And for those who say "Sharia is only for Muslims". Oh well, stop lying. I was almost lynched in Suleja when I followed someone for a telecommunications mast gig because they said the guy saw a woman bathing. In the same Kwamba area of Suleja, people buy beer like it's cocaine. They hide to buy it. It's hoarded because Sharia enforcers can kill you if no one is watching. Yes they stabbed someone in Kwamba in 2011 and left him in harmattan cold because he was drunk. So yes, Sharia if well implemented, affects everyone living in the location. Christian or Muslim. And Nigeria being a secular state is incompatible with it. Some countries implement Sharia and it's working fine for them. That's because they are 90+% Muslims. If You want Sharia by all means, then we must restructure the country. We will have Christian states and regions and Muslim states and regions. Then it can work But this is 2026, nobody is doing that. Let's figure out how AI will not make everyone Jobless.

Bola Tinubu and Remi Tinubu are a perfect illustration of what it means to marry one’s type. A vicious couple bonded by destructive and greedy proclivities. Zero empathy. All they care about is political power and total state capture. When will this nightmare end in our country?

In 2023, Bayo Onanuga desecrated the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with the tweet below. It has to be one of the lowest points for a presidential spokesperson to profile an entire ethnic group, forgetting that Lagos is also bound by the same laws that guarantee every citizen full political rights. Sadly, the Presidency did not call him to order. Onanuga may have poisoned the well of national unity in 2023. A repeat of that must not be allowed to happen in 2027, as no Nigerian is more Nigerian than the other. Retweet aggressively
