My appreciation also for members of AFSCME local 2474 representing hospital staff who were present at the hearing! It was great to connect with them as people who take care of residents from all over the state everyday.

Operation Metro Surge has put thousands of Minnesota families at risk of losing their homes. That’s why, as chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I immediately arranged for an expedited hearing on SF3596 emergency rental assistance. We heard it the same day – Wednesday, 3/4/26 – it was passed to us by the Tax Committee and we sent it to the Finance Committee later the same day. This is extraordinary speed for a bill. I also authored an amendment extending the eviction notice period from 14 to 30 days under state law for the duration of the program — giving families the time they need to get help before losing their homes. My support for this proposal was immediate and my commitment is unwavering. I’m proud to stand with our neighbors during this time.

We cannot property tax our way through challenges that our county is facing. Federal disinvestment in health care and cuts to important services are taking a deep toll, we simply cannot afford the sheriff office’s budget to grow anymore than it has.

In January, overtime for the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office was $1.3 million. The HCSO could overspend its budget by $15 million+ if we don’t change course. Today we unanimously passed a BAR I’ve been working hard on- HCSO is not authorized to exceed the budget set for 2026.

Today we passed a series of actions to support local businesses impacted by Operation Metro Surge. These actions include a $2 million Small Business Recovery Fund effective immediately! Nearly 200 businesses will receive financial relief in grants to stay open and recover losses.

Today in the Senate HHS committee, I provided a financial update on the Hennepin Healthcare System. Cuts to healthcare are having a drastic impact on the financial stability of our hospital that is visited by tens of thousands of Minnesotans in and outside of Hennepin every year.
