5 years ago Deloitte Nigeria started the cybersecurity academy to train and keep their own cyber talents. People with zero experience were trained for over 2 years and sent to the field to work with top clients and that is how I got into cybersecurity. You can’t stumble talents.

Financial Institutions, especially one like Moniepoint that seems to have a very high ceiling, it should adopt the GTBank approach. GT over time has developed a very structured and disciplined approach to talent development. They do pre-NYSC internships, OND-HND placements and year round Graduate Trainee programmes. They have a dedicated training school infrastructure dedicated to this and highly invested in. We have seen this pipeline progress talents from Trainee roles to mid-level, into management and board executives….all from Training school (mind you, GT had been doing this even as a new bank in the mid 90s) This strategy has helped them deploy internally trained staff across their African subsidiaries and even into its non-banking ventures. Through this, they have a shared culture, and unified way of operation as a bank & I believe it has become a competitive advantage. Access & Zenith are trying too. Their need for external experienced hires is less than 20% of their total staffing needs and infact other big institutions hire from them up to the executive level. It’s a long, painful process but it’s important for any future-thinking organization.

It’s very possible that Moniepoint has hundreds of vacancies it’s struggling to fill with competent people. That’s not unusual….companies experience this. But the reasons you listed are just ridiculous and outrightly wrong The labour market is a cycle; you get what you put in. Many companies today are aggressively searching for “experienced hires,” yet they have not built a strong pipeline of entry-level talent. That’s where the issue with Moniepoint is. These experienced guys are trained, developed and refined over years…they don’t just appear from somewhere. If every company focuses only on hiring ready-made talent without committing to developing new ones, then the shortage will only get worse. That’s why the more sustainable model is what companies like GTCO & Access have done over the years. build from the ground up, create a strong talent pipeline and fill critical roles internally. Over time, that approach reduces reliance on external experienced hires by at least 50% and builds a more stable workforce.

I remember tweeting that I led the recruitment of COREN-certified engineers, and one CEO reached out to me saying he needed four of them. He mentioned his budget was 500k, and I was seriously laughing. Some engineers receive Hilux with their offer letter, and you’re saying 500k.

The battle between Architects and Engineers is like the battle between Army and Police. At the top, the generals and Commissioners of police are collaborating, shaking hands and eating good. At the bottom or slightly below the food chain, their men are fighting each other. 😂

It is not enough to be good, you must be competitive. Yeah, I know you a 90, but what happens when you enter rooms where the median is a 95?

Today, I reflect on my journey and the trajectory of my life and I’m deeply grateful for how God has guided me every step of the way. Started investing 19 years ago when I was 26. I have studied over 1000 audited and annual reports through this period. Studied Computer Sc. Attend Engineering, Project and Production Management program in university of Brighton in 2012. Attended Project Management MBA crash program organized by PMI in Pennsylvania in 2014. Financial markets course in Yale. I began my career at Microsoftware, where I worked for a couple of years as a Technical Assistant to the Director and Software Architect, the only role in which I served as an employee. During that time, we were among the pioneers using PowerBuilder (a 4GL programming language) alongside Sybase SQL. I was privileged to be part of an exceptional team, contributing to the development of several Enterprise Pension and Personnel Management Systems (EPPMS), including a major development and deployment for the Nigerian Railway Corporation, supporting over 35,000 staff and more than 100,000 pensioners at the time. Printwiser, Labelwriter, Guk solutions for Academy Press, APBF, Megavons security, just to mention a few. In 2010, I transitioned into consulting, advising one of the largest microfinance banks in Rivers State on ICT infrastructure evaluation. By 2015, I became involved with WETV project at its inception, where I played a key role in building critical CTO-level systems. Wacom Cintiq cartoon solutions. Through strategic collaboration with Eurocom, we delivered specialized systems. I also contributed to multiple projects across media platforms including Cool FM, Naija Info, and Wazobia FM. In 2017, I was part of the team that deployed a critical hardware security gateway layer, working with UN Unlimited South Africa for the largest revenue-generating government institution rep in Nigeria. In 2018, I collaborated with Crossmatch Identity Solutions (now HID, USA) on integrating advanced identity systems for a major government revenue agency. Built rendering systems for Lekki Gardens, during the pandemic. And some specialized systems for Clout Studio during the pandemic as well. Ventured into real estate in 2022 I have also worked on several strategic projects with Webb Fontaine Nigeria, contributing to platforms that powered Nigeria’s bilateral trade and revenue systems at some point among other impactful initiatives throughout my career. Today, I am living a lifelong ambition, sharing insights and helping others build strong investment portfolios on the NGX through my work on X. Cheers to 45 🍾
