I am sentimental, which is odd given my former professions.
Yesterday was a big day, and like many that will come, I was not part of it and watched from afar. There is some solace in knowing your child has left the nest and is forging his own path, but it is humbling, nonetheless. It will be a few years before he may need to dance with the elephants and serve the nation, but it’s important to note the milestones along the journey.
Tuesday they were Plebes. Today they are Yuks.

I was very honored to receive the @USNI US Naval Institute “Author of the Year” award at Annapolis yesterday for my book, RED TIDE. 📕 (Pictured here with Admiral Ray Spicer, my wife Stacia, and others from the @USNIBooks staff).
The premise of Red Tide is a PRC blockade of Taiwan to seize chip foundries. Today’s WSJ editorial by Benard and Feith of @HudsonInstitute nails the strategic stakes in the context of tech dominance, the real prize when they write: “…control over Taiwan would give Beijing both a military advantage and a chokehold on the physical infrastructure of the AI age. China wouldn’t need to operate every plant flawlessly to throw the global AI ecosystem into crisis. The mere prospect of coercive control, disruption or selective access would upend the balance of technological power.” Highly recommend you read this excellent article!

This struck a chord with me in no small part because of my former profession. Maskirovka is as real today as it was during the Cold War. As illustrated in my friend @Wiswesser 's new book Tradecraft, Tactics, and Dirty Tricks: Russian Intelligence and Putin's Secret War – it’s less about a specific outcome but rather undermining democracy and spreading doubt. At best, an assassination is next to impossible pull off flawlessly and staging one is beyond implausible. That we’ve reached a point in our society that an educated citizenry believes such as possible – perhaps likely – should be a wake-up call.
Some men want to set the world on fire. Sometimes we can’t see the flames, feel the heat, or smell the smoke. Sometimes it’s the belief in the completely implausible that tells the story.

There are days I wait for all year as if I’m ten years old and it’s early December. This is one of those days. I’ve been a huge fan of Brad Taylor’s Pike Logan series from the first day I stumbled upon a copy of ONE ROUGH MAN in a bookstore outside Charleston, SC fifteen years ago. Honestly, it’s so many things—characters that have come to be real, that over time you seem to know personally, to the locations and the plots. Moreover, it’s Brad’s writing. He brings an authenticity to the page that few others can.
Can’t tell you how excited I am to dig into SHADOW STRIKE. There goes my weekend. I guess someone else is going to have to mow the lawn. Thanks, Brad.

I didn’t play Rugby as a boy, growing up on a farm outside a small town during a time when the sport was not widely known, except as being “similar” to football. This comparison is akin to saying cricket is “similar” to baseball; while both involve a bat and a moving ball, the similarities largely end there.
I missed out on something significant. Rugby is more than just a sport; it is a profound experience.
My son discovered Rugby at a young age, and it has become a central part of his life. He now plays on the team featured in an upcoming documentary. While he is not in the film, this team has become his tribe—a remarkable group of young men who will carry the torch for all of us into the future.
I could not be prouder and am genuinely excited about this documentary film.
