Today is the 81st anniversary of the Women’s Army Corps. Motivated by the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Congress approved the creation of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps in 1942, which was signed into law the following day by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. #WomenVeterans

Sixty-two years ago, on May 5, 1961, Navy veteran Alan Shepard became the first American in space when the Freedom 7 spacecraft launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Ten years later, Shepard would become the fifth man to walk on the moon! Thank you for your service, sailor!

Each year on May 1, the U.S. honors the sacrifices of combat wounded and ill service members on #SilverStarServiceBannerDay. Today is also a day to recognize the service members who have been awarded the Silver Star, the military’s third-highest combat decoration for valor.
