Any increase in monthly expenses is frustrating, and utility costs are a real concern for the District. Rising energy demand and power plant retirements in our area have forced Pepco to pay a higher price at auction for the electricity it supplies to most customers. Starting June 1, an average residential customer will see a total bill increase of 6.2%, or about $8.79 per month. Learn why at bit.ly/DCPSC-Pepco-SOS and get help with your bill at dcpsc.org/help.

Our multi-year Whole Building Deep Energy Retrofit Program was an energy efficiency initiative created to modernize affordable multifamily buildings in the District, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and lower utility costs for vulnerable communities. We’re proud to share that the @DCSEU used funds from this program to replace 15 aging heat pumps and installed programmable thermostats for 41 veteran households at a facility operated by Access Housing. dcpsc.org/Newsroom/HotTo…

Be careful who you trust at your front door, on the phone, or in your inbox. "Imposter scams," where bad actors pose as utility employees, are on the rise in the District. These scammers threaten immediate service disconnection and try to steal your money or personal information. Remember: don't let unverified workers into your home, hang up the phone if you feel pressured, and call your utility company directly to verify your account status. Learn more at fightutilityscams.com.

We know many District residents are frustrated and fed up with rising electric bills. The truth is that most of your bill is driven by regional factors outside of local control: surging demand on our grid, retiring power plants, strict federal reliability requirements, and the cost of transitioning to renewable energy. What can we do? Continue being a strict gatekeeper. We audit the local delivery portion of your bill, reject unjustified utility spending, and are currently conducting a formal, ongoing investigation into energy affordability to find long-term solutions for residents.
