☘️Happy St. Patrick's Day!🍀 “It is in the shelter of each other that people live.” - Irish proverb If you don't know by now, DDA's Living Options clients LOVE a good party, and St. Paddy's Day is one of the best! This year, we got together at DDA's new head office, got some take-out, played games, and sang songs! 🎤🎉💚 #stpaddysday #KissMeImIrish #luckoftheirish #inclusionmatters

Back in 1987, then-President Ronald Reagan proclaimed March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in the US. While the initiative isn't fully recognized in Canada, we do understand the need to embrace neurodiversity in everyday life. At DDA, we’re proud to join the conversation. For more than 70 years, we’ve worked alongside individuals and families to build communities where people with developmental disabilities are included, supported, and valued. #DevelopmentalDisabilitiesAwarenessMonth #March2026 nacdd.org/2026-dd-awaren…

Our talented artist Siobhan Harris really enjoys her process in making her art pieces. Her pointillist techniques have developed so well that her paintings and pottery brings such a great visual experience! 😍

Today marks 16 years since Canada ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). This December will also mark the 20th anniversary of the Convention’s adoption by the United Nations. The CRPD was created to ensure the full and equal enjoyment of human rights by people with disabilities and to promote respect for their inherent dignity. These milestones offer an important opportunity to pause and ask: Are we living up to the commitments we made? When the Convention was adopted, it marked a turning point — a shared global commitment to dignity, equality and belonging for people with disabilities. It affirmed that people with disabilities are rights-holders and active participants in society. But commitments on paper are not enough. Governments must demonstrate the leadership, accountability and action required to translate the Convention’s principles into real change in people’s lives. As we reflect on the past 16 years since Canada’s ratification, we recognize that progress has been made. But significant barriers remain. Inclusion Canada will continue to work to ensure that Canada fully implements the CRPD and delivers on equality and inclusion. The journey toward full inclusion is far from over. Canada made a legally binding commitment when it ratified the CRPD. Realizing that commitment requires sustained leadership, accountability and action. That accountability must start by repealing Track 2 Medical Assistance in Dying, implementing a coordinated deinstitutionalization strategy, ensuring consistent policies on inclusive education, and addressing the disproportionate poverty of people with disabilities. #CRPD

Working at DDA is a ton of fun!😃 A big thanks to DDA managers Sanam and Kory, helping out at one of the many job fairs we take part in. Working in the community living space has its own rewards, the least of which is supporting people who often don't have a voice. Check out our careers section today. From Early Childhood Educators to Community Support Workers and more, there is something for you to get your career going. develop.bc.ca/about-us/caree…

Becoming a Home Share provider isn’t just about opening your home; it’s about opening your life. 🏠 Here at DDA, we match people with developmental disabilities with caring providers who want to make a difference. But here’s what people don’t always realize: it can also be fun. We’re currently recruiting in Vancouver and Richmond. #HomeShare #community #CommunityLiving develop.bc.ca/home-share-let…

Today I learned that my friend Ken passed away. Ken had cerebral palsy like me. He was only a year younger, and for most of my life he was the person I had known the longest who lived with the same disability. There is something powerful about that kind of connection. You do not have to explain the daily challenges, the work it takes, or the determination required to live a full life. The understanding is already there. We spent a lot of our younger years together playing adaptive sports and finding ways to compete, laugh, and prove to ourselves that our lives would be bigger than the limitations others expected of us. We also shared season tickets to Lions games. Some of my favorite memories are simply sitting beside him cheering, debating calls, and enjoying the game like any other fans. As life unfolded, I got married and moved away. Like many friendships, our connection slowly shifted to the occasional message on Facebook and updates on each other’s lives. But hearing that Ken passed away hit me hard. When someone who shares your disability leaves this world, it lands differently. Ken and I carried many of the same challenges and the same determination to keep moving forward. He was only a year younger than me, which makes the moment even more reflective. As I get older, living with cerebral palsy gets harder every single day. It takes more effort, more energy, and more determination than it once did. But moments like this remind me how fortunate I am to still be here, still contributing, and still surrounded by people and work that give life meaning. Ken was part of the early chapters of that journey for me. I am grateful for the memories, the sports, the games, and the years when we were just two guys with cerebral palsy determined to live full lives. Rest easy, my friend.
