It actually blows my mind that people pay for food taxis. Like I legitimately cannot fathom this. I’m an engineer. My husband is an engineer. One might say we could easily afford Door Dash. Yet, we have literally never ordered it on our own dime in my entire life. Not even once.

@ToddNidasqM @beerandtokens What I think Boomers fail to understand is that today, "luxuries" (TVs/Phones) today are cheap and "basics" today (like housing/insurance) are expensive, relative to income.

Back in the 70s we didn't take lavish vacations and didn't spend on iPhones, Netflix, Prime, Paramont +, internet, Amazon, DoorDash, and dining out all the time. Nowadays, people just choose to spend their money differently. Apartments were not luxury with exercise rooms, rooftop pools, and balconies. It was just different. Much more simple and money went a lot further.

During the 70s the median mortgage payment made up less than 20% the median salary. Today it’s nearly 30%. Which btw, means the median salary doesn’t even qualify for a mortgage on a median priced house. Yes, you experienced inflation in the 70s. But life’s necessities were dramatically cheaper as a percentage of wages.

so after doing the math I’ve realized if I eat a chipotle bowl every day that’s only about $80 a week, which is MUCH LESS less money than I’ve been spending on weekly groceries

Wealth tax is dumb because you'd be taxing speculation instead of something actually real. Bernie Sanders doesn't understand that, though, because he has the economic understanding of a small child and thinks if someone is a billionaire, that must mean he has billions in coins in a vault somewhere like Scrooge McDuck.

My dad made mid-five figures as the sole earner for most of my childhood. $50,000 gross in the '90s would be the equivalent of $109k before taxes. If this were your entire household income now, you would struggle to afford the same lifestyle or just not afford it at all.
