National D-Day Memorial

#OTD in 1969, nearly 25 years after D-Day, Dwight Eisenhower died at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C. Of his 78 years, Eisenhower dedicated over forty to his country, rising from Second Lieutenant to President of the United States.

On this Medal of Honor Day, we remember the four Medal of Honor recipients from D-Day. The plaque honoring 1st Lt. Jimmie Monteith Jr., a native of VA, was the first to be installed in the Memorial's Medal of Honor Garden.

For this week’s #WarPosterWednesday, we’re highlighting the Cadet Nurse Corps. Intended to combat a potential nursing shortage, this program provided free, accelerated medical training to cadets. From 1943-1948, over 120,000 women enrolled in the Cadet Nurse Corps.

#OTD in 1942, the U.S. Army K9 Corps was founded. The first military dog program in the U.S., canine and human members served bravely in every theater of the war. One K9 veteran, Chips, served with the 3rd Infantry Division, where he became the highest decorated K9 of the war.

This #WarPosterWednesday honors Dorie Miller, the first Black American to be awarded the Navy Cross. His bravery aboard the USS West Virginia during the attack on Pearl Harbor distinguished him, and Miller received the Navy Cross in May 1942.
