Our team collects about 1.5 tons of organic waste from 10 local partners each month. By diverting this waste from landfills, we are eliminating 165 pounds of Methane. We compost this material, which can be used to remediate 40 square feet of soil that is contaminated with lead.

@JoeBerner Great question. Unfortunately, plants can't pull out all lead from the soil but they will have the biggest impact in the first 10 years or so. After that, compost application will further help reduce concentrations and wood chips can be used to create a physical barrier.

@DECO_Resources If you were to plant 100 5 ft sunflower plants, would it take 1, 10, 30, or more years to remediate the levels? Thanks!

@JoeBerner Lead is a persistent metal that will not go away unless physically removed. Compost makes the lead less bioavailable to plants and people but it also creates a physical barrier to reduce exposure. Also, adding compost reduces the concentration of lead through dilution.

@DECO_Resources Does the compost eliminate or reduce the lead present in the soil, or just reduce the lead uptake by plants?
