Elon Musk Calls for Severe Sanctions on South Africa
Tech billionaire Elon Musk, who was born in Pretoria, has urged the international community to impose severe sanctions on and globally shun South Africa, accusing the country of systemic racism against white and Asian citizens.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Musk responded to news that South Africa’s Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana will skip an upcoming G20 meeting in Washington amid growing tensions with the United States. “Good,” Musk wrote. “South Africa should be shunned until it stops its extreme anti-white and anti-Asian racism. It’s time for severe sanctions against South Africa.”
The remarks escalate Musk’s long-running criticism of South Africa’s post-apartheid policies, particularly Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) laws. These laws require racial targets for ownership, management, and employment to redress inequalities from the apartheid era. Musk has repeatedly claimed the policies amount to “Apartheid 2.0” and that they are blocking his Starlink satellite internet service from operating in the country unless it meets black ownership requirements.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has defended BEE as essential for transformation, rejecting any suggestion of dropping the framework. South African officials maintain the laws are not racist but corrective, and that Asians (including Chinese people) are classified under equity programs.
Musk’s call has triggered a fierce online backlash in South Africa, with many users accusing him of hypocrisy and entitlement, and of ignoring the country’s efforts to correct historical injustices. Others, including some within the white and business communities, have voiced support, arguing the policies discriminate against non-black minorities.
The billionaire, who left South Africa in the early 1990s, has become increasingly vocal about farm murders, emigration, and what he describes as anti-white sentiment under the African National Congress (ANC)-led government. His latest intervention highlights deepening rifts between the entrepreneur and his country of birth, coming at a time when US-South Africa relations are already strained.
