Should you max out your 401(k) or your Roth IRA first?
Start with your 401(k), but only up to your employer match.
For example: You make $60,000 per year, and your company matches 50% of up to 5% of your salary...
That means you’re investing $3,000 per year into your 401(k) and your employer is matching $1,500, totalling $4,500.
You just got an instant 50% return on your $3,000. No market risk, no waiting.
Once that’s done, start maxing out your Roth IRA.
The 2026 limit is $7,500/year. These gains are tax-free upon withdrawal when you retire, so this is your 2nd greatest priority after 401(k) employer matching.
If you have any remaining dry powder after that, return to your 401(k) and contribute more, or invest in a brokerage account.
This is the order of events that makes the most sense right now.
Get out there and start investing!

The player who scored the winning penalty for Bosnia, to eliminate Italy from World Cup contention, was 21-year-old Wisconsin-born Esmir Bajraktarevic, former U.S. youth international who also made his USMNT debut in 2024, before switching his international allegiance to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Bajraktarevic was born to parents who fled the Bosnian war as refugees. He spent time with the SC Wave and Chicago Fire academies before moving to the New England Revolution academy — making his first team debut in 2022. He made the move to PSV in January 2025.
