I was at a supermarket yesterday. A man who came in before me was about to pay for his things. Total bill: ₦92,600. He tapped his card. Declined. He tried again, error message that says. “Issuer inoperative.” But the ₦92,600 had already left his account. The supermarket POS didn’t receive any credit alert. The manager said, “Sir, we can’t let you go with the items until we see the payment.” The man showed them his banking app and said, “I have been debited already. Do I look like I’m here to steal bread?” Still, they refused. The man just stood there looking frustrated. You could clearly tell he wasn’t a small person. After some minutes, he walked to his car and said he would come back later. Where do people’s money stay after leaving their account because this same thing happened to me before. ₦38k hung during payment in the market, and it took 37 days of back and forth with the bank before I got reversed. Now I’m thinking… What happens if that was their last money? What if they needed it to eat or survive for the week? Why does the Nigerian banking system hang people’s money for so long without considering if that’s all they have to survive on?
