Part of our daily routine in Rm 16 is literacy centres. Games, partner reading with decodables, word sorts, reading and orthographic mapping with the teacher all help Ss to read and write new words. It's exciting seeing them grow their confidence & skills! @DHarkness_CBE

Ss explored the properties of natural materials by making tea! Will each ingredient sink or float? Ss made predictions, tested, & discussed why. Best of all? Inviting teachers to maskihkiwâpoy minihkwê (have some tea), then trying it ourselves! @DHarkness_CBE

S & their "greater than" alligators went on a math walk comparing sizes & # s all around. Best was the map & languages board! How many more are from this country? Do more speak this language or that? What languages do we want to learn? Diversity = our superpower! @DHarkness_CBE

Gr. 2s finished their Treaty 7 concept maps this week. Inspired by Calgary Public Library's Land Acknowledgement video, Ss used fabric to represent the land, animals, and places to visit around Mohkinstsis (Calgary) and Alberta. @DHarkness_CBE

This week, Ss in my Math HH zoomed in on number lines to 20. Using math language such as "mid-line", "equal spaces", and "benchmark", students showed their skills & explained their thinking. @DHarkness_CBE

Students make great teachers! These kiddos did a terrific job explaining how to fill in & read our class graph. Math warm-up is heating up: graphing is now part of our weekly routine! @DHarkness_CBE

Is this pumpkin or plastic? Ss decided that weight, texture, smell, the sound it made when knocked on & details on its skin meant it was real! How tall & how wide is it? Ss first estimated, then measured using blocks & string. @DHarkness_CBE

Gr2s learned different ways to collect and interpret data. Which shapes are the most popular? The least popular? What other words can we use to compare amounts? The winning design is... boo-tiful! @DHarkness_CBE

Diversity really is DHS's superpower! Ss were so proud to see themselves mirrored in this book & learn more about their classmates' languages. Do you see your language here? @DHarkness_CBE

Which circles of community do you belong to? Inspired by The Circles All Around Us by Brad Montague, 2s discovered: many! Even better was when they found their home languages in his book! Language missing? NP: just add it! @DHarkness_CBE

In rm 16 Math HH, 2s explored open number lines. What does mystery A card represent? Why can't you place 2 near 8? The biggest ah-ha for Ss was after filling in all the numbers, they realized numbers must be spaced out equally! @DHarkness_CBE

What is a number line? How can it help you to understand numbers better? Gr. 2s are exploring these questions through Math Harkness Hour. These rm 16 Ss worked with Ms. Smyth and some of her 2s to build a human number line. Even Ms. George joined in the fun! @DHarkness_CBE

Big smiles and proud kiddos in rm 16 yesterday as they cracked the Esti-mystery! Confidence, strategies, and skills are growing through daily math warm-ups and math talks. @DHarkness_CBE

The first snowfall! Ss were excited to share their discoveries as their outdoor world had changed overnight. Ice! Snow! Frozen treasures everywhere! And the big slide was extra fast :) @DHarkness_CBE

Ss build social language, creativity, & cooperation skills through cooperative games time. The most popular centre? Gr2s choo-choo-choose drawing & trains! @DHarkness_CBE

Practicing daily mindfulness breathing helps students to get ready for learning following recess and lunch. Students enjoy being chosen to lead classmates through Box, Figure 8, and Rainbow breathing @DHarkness_CBE

What's the difference between "cap" and "cape"? Harkness Hour focussed on reading "long a" words with the Magic E spelling pattern. Games, songs & reading practice helped to solidify learning. @DHarkness_CBE

On my birthday, Gr2s tried to figure out how old I am, Esti-Mystery style. Math terms like "odd/ even", "greater than/ less than," and "digits" helped Ss to narrow down the options. But who estimated that I'm 60?! I was flattered by 19, tho ;) @DHarkness_CBE
