I kept this story in my pocket for a long time....
In Pittsburgh, September 15th is Roberto Clemente Day.
Every year the whole organization fans out across the city. It's like Christmas. Roberto's family is there, Vera and the boys.
My first year as manager was 2011. We celebrated. We shook hands and moved on.
We didn't win.
19 consecutive losing seasons.
2012 rolls around. Same day, same celebration. We had another losing season, our 20th consecutive.
After the ceremony, Roberto Jr. walked over.
"My mom wants to talk to you."
We went into the dugout. Me, Vera, and her three sons.
She spoke in Spanish. I played four years of winter ball so I understood enough. She wasn't angry, but she was passionate. And I kept hearing Roberto's number come up.
Roberto Jr. translated.
"My mother wants you to know that there cannot be a 21st losing season. That was Roberto's number. It would be a disgrace to his legacy."
She was staring right at me.
Before I could even think about what to say, words came out of my mouth:
"I promise you, Vera. That won't happen."
Roberto Jr. looked at me and said, "You made my mom a promise. I hope you can keep it."
I said, "I hope I can keep it too."
I didn't tell my coaches. I didn't tell the players. I told my wife. That was it.
The next year, 2013, we broke the consecutive seasons losing streak. Ended it at 20.
On Roberto Clemente Day that September, Vera came walking across that field.
And I probably got one of the most meaningful hugs I've ever received in my life.
The players did all the heavy lifting. I just got the hug.
Some promises are worth making before you know if you can keep them.

I keep hearing really good things about Campbell. This is a good thing - reconnecting the guys across the full range of PSU Football history will only make the program better.
After all...#WeAre all part of one tradition that stretches back 140 years and counting.

ICYMI - On the latest episode of TFN RADIO w/ @buchignani former Penn State CB Stephon Morris (2009-2012) described the disconnect from the program many lettermen felt during the James Franklin era. 📻FULL EPISODE: youtu.be/r_NEGtf4oKI?si…

@WillHorstman_ It’s a great response. I don’t know that we can get anyone better. We gotta go all in and I hope “We Are” willing

My thoughts on Penn State’s portaling so far:
1. Matt Campbell is hitting a Home Run (I’ll explain below)
2. Coach Campbell said he wanted players and coaches that wanted to be here. This was THE issue for Penn State in 2025. There is no I in Team.
3. A bunch of guys hitting the portal left because they weren’t in the aforementioned group( see #2) A bunch of guys didn’t fit the new mold. Some guys want to get as much money as
Possible like free agency( also see #2) Some guys were Franklin guys.
4. Watching film on ISU transfers has me stoked. Hard working and talented. Last season we had too many of the talented and we had a deficit of hard working. We all know which players had both.
5. National media made us think Pat Kraft ruined our beloved lions and nobody wanted to coach or play here. After reading what these transfers are saying obviously this was bullshit.
6. I think after this week youll start seeing some really good (non ISU) transfers.
7. My optimism for next season is sky high. It’s been a long time since we had a head coach that can actually coach.
All my opinion. What do you think?

@BFW Pretty good. Kyle isn’t 2, I think hes 5. Number 4 will be 1 in 5 years.

Yup.
Looks like he’s been here forever.

I'm going to guess every Penn State fan has already bought into Matt Campbell.

Pat Kraft on the firing of James Franklin:
“Penn State owes an enormous amount of gratitude to Coach Franklin who rebuilt our football program into a national power. He won a Big Ten Championship, led us to seven New Year’s Six bowl games and a College Football Playoff appearance last year. However, we hold our athletics programs to the highest of standards, and we believe this is the right moment for new leadership at the helm of our football program to advance us toward Big Ten and national championships.”
