An Indian national pleaded guilty today for his role in a scheme to smuggle aliens from India across the northern border with Canada into the United States. The investigation and indictment were supported and prosecuted by Joint Task Force Alpha (JTFA), the Department’s lead effort in combating high-impact human smuggling and trafficking committed by cartels and Transnational Criminal Organizations (TCOs). Pakistani national Abbas Ali Haider appeared in court for the first time after being extradited from Mexico. He’s charged with conspiring to smuggle Pakistani nationals into the United States using sham film production companies as his front. The companies fraudulently sponsored work visas for aliens while charging them up to $40,000 for the fraud sponsorship and customs coaching. Know the truth about human smuggling: • It’s often a serious national security risk, allowing potential terrorists into our country. • It’s a dangerous vehicle for sex and labor trafficking. • ️Smugglers usually have no concern for the safety and lives of those they sneak in. ICE special agents led this investigation with help from ICE officers, CBP and the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. Mexican authorities arrested Haider in January and extradited him this month at the U.S. Justice Department’s request.
