After Jetseta’s death, Iowa passed legislation that toughened penalties for people who commit violent crimes against children and increased monitoring for these individuals once they leave prison.

On March 24, 2005, Jetseta Gage was assaulted and murdered. She was 10 when she was abducted from her grandmother’s home, then murdered by a family friend who had been previously convicted of a sex offense. Today, we remember Jetseta.

Today would have been Carlie Brucia’s 34th birthday. When she was 11, she was kidnapped and murdered while walking home from a friend’s house. Carlie is remembered as sweet and caring, and she loved animals. Today, we remember Carlie.

Amanda Brown would have turned 35 today. She was 7 when she was abducted from her home and murdered by a convicted sex offender. Today, we remember Amanda.

#OTD in 2003, Elizabeth Smart was rescued by police in Utah. Elizabeth had been abducted at age 14 and held captive for 9 months. Elizabeth now advocates for sexual assault survivors through the Elizabeth Smart Foundation.

As part of the 2003 PROTECT Act, Congress passed the Suzanne Lyall Campus Safety Act, which raised the age of missing persons who must be entered into the National Crime Information Center from 18 to 21.

On March 2, 1998, 19-year-old Suzanne Lyall was abducted after getting off the bus to walk to her college dorm room.

#OTD 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford was killed by a convicted sex offender after she was abducted three days earlier. Her death led to Florida’s passage of the Jessica Lunsford Act in 2005, which increased sentences for adults convicted of molesting a victim under 12 years old.

Jacob Wetterling would have turned 48 today. On Oct. 22, 1989, 11-year-old Jacob was biking home from a store with his friend and brother when he was abducted by a sex offender and then murdered. Today, we remember Jacob. #11forJacob.
