@kyalXIII @DoctorLemma It was free when I did it in Scotland in 2009. Form was called 'Statutory Declaration'. You book an appointment with a court official, sign it in front of them. They witness it, and you're done. Some companies will charge, but you can DIY for free.

It never even crossed my mind that changing your legal identity could actually be cheaper than paying an airline penalty. But back in 2015, a nineteen-year-old student from the United Kingdom legally changed his name to Adam West to completely bypass a budget airline fee. Adam Armstrong was planning a holiday to Spain, and his girlfriend's stepfather generously booked the flights. The problem was that the stepfather copied the teenager's name directly from Facebook. Armstrong had jokingly used the surname of the classic television Batman actor on his profile, so the tickets were booked under a fake identity. When he asked Ryanair to fix the text, the airline demanded a £220 (around $336 USD) administrative fee to update the booking. Instead of handing over the money, Armstrong realized changing a name by deed poll is completely free in the UK. He signed the paperwork to officially become Adam West and then paid £103 (around $158 USD) to rush a new passport, completely bypassing the airline penalty. Ryanair publicly defended the strict policy, arguing that steep fees prevent people from buying cheap seats and reselling them at a profit. Because Armstrong missed their narrow grace period and had a round-trip ticket, his penalty had automatically doubled. The teenager successfully boarded the plane under his new name, telling reporters he simply refused to give the company another penny. He actually turned a profit on the ordeal by selling his story to a national newspaper, noting he would just keep the superhero surname until his new passport expired.

@MissLauraMarcus I would never consider shoplifting, but when people take whatever they want and stroll off, you start to ask: "what is the point?" Why am I working so hard and queueing up to pay? Is there a tipping point where folk like me just think "fuck it" and start joining in?

Ok about shoplifters. In the early 80s I worked on a local paper which included covering magistrates courts. There most weeks was a sad old forgetful woman who’d accidentally put a tin of tuna or a tub of yoghurt into her bag and left without paying. The store prosecuted and she was invariably found guilty. Even tho for a guilty verdict the store had to prove not only that she had taken the goods but it was with “the intention of permanently depriving the store of its property.” I saw women in their 70s weep copiously at getting a criminal record for forgetfulness. Many were recent widows - and as one myself I can attest to how that scrambles the brain! What happened!? Now we get young men, sometimes in gangs, deliberately depriving stores of their property and not only is this no longer treated as a crime - if any shop worker tries to stop them they get sacked! And the police don’t want to know. This is lawlessness many of us have witnessed as we do our grocery shopping. And it sickens us. Crime is a huge issue - always comes up high in lists of what bothers voters most. Why has theft from shops been decriminalised? What other crimes are also decriminalised? Basically, who’s in charge now? Law enforcers or criminals?

Back in the World Cup Finals of 1974, the opening ceremony saw each nation come out of collapsing giant footballs in their national dress. Here is Scotland! #WorldCup

In the UK, we deal with international uncertainty and the possibility of World War Three by going to the pub and coming up with names for our quiz teams. These are from last night:
