In the solemn darkness of Holy Friday, Orthodox Greece gathers in profound mourning for Her crucified Lord. The Epitaphs — adorned with fragrant spring flowers as a final act of love — are lifted upon the shoulders of the faithful and carried through the silent streets. Thousands of candles flicker like tears in the night, while ancient hymns of lament rise into the heavens: the sorrowful voice of the Holy Mary weeping for her divine Son. No joy is yet permitted. No Resurrection hymns are sung. Only mourning — deep, collective, and timeless. From the bustling avenues of Athens to the quiet mountain villages and the wave-kissed shores of the islands, Greece walks behind the funeral bier of Christ as one body, one heart, one sorrow. In Greece I encountered some of the warmest, most genuinely kind people.
Once, at a local Greek restaurant, their card terminal wasn’t working. When I said I had no cash, they simply smiled and told me not to worry and to enjoy the meal.
Another time, I stopped for coffee at a small stand, this time run by immigrants. Same situation - no terminal, no cash. They just smiled and made it for me anyway.
There were many moments like this.
It wasn’t just locals - even people who weren’t originally from Greece sometimes showed the same openness. There’s something in the atmosphere there that the Greeks created that seems to bring out that kind of natural kindness.
Much appreciated.
And honestly, their kindness toward animals in this law as well is something others could learn from.
