I just don’t see diplomats as having any incentive to leak like that. There may be some examples the former President is aware of, but there was no broad DFA animus towards him. My interest was in hosting political figures who could perform well. In my experience, President Higgins always acquitted himself well & especially during the State Visit to Britain.

Michael D Higgins criticises foreign affairs staff over alleged leaks I hosted former President Higgins many times in Britain & the USA including for the historic State Visit in 2014 which I consider to have been a huge success. DFA colleagues particularly valued his role in our 2020 election to UN SECCO. I suspect the leaks he refers to came from government rather than officials in DFA. irishtimes.com/politics/2026/…

@EO_Halloran That’s an outcome which can be tackled with the right approach and leadership. The part I can’t fathom is how defeatist critics get to control the narrative. All of the ingredients are there, we just need to execute the decisions better.
