The first airdrop signals the beginning of Grass, and it is meant to reward early participants who contributed their resources prior to the network’s launch. With millions of users eligible, it stands to be the most widely distributed airdrop of all time. We are committed to doing what’s best for the long-term success of the network. As such, we are fine-tuning our detections systems to reduce false positives, meaning token allocations displayed in the airdrop checker are not final. Thank you for being part of the journey.

Grass is on a mission to put users first, challenging the status quo where middleware companies have been abusing your resources. With the Grass Desktop Node, you're in control, contributing to a fairer, open internet. Ready to get started? Download the Desktop Node from the Grass app store today and join us in revolutionizing the web. Take back control with Grass.

NEW PRODUCT RELEASE (INVITE-ONLY BETA) Over the past few months, we’ve been making Grass operate better, faster, and cheaper. Today, we're excited to introduce our Desktop Node, which uses less than 5% of the resources of a Chromium browser and handles 10x more bandwidth than the chrome extension. The first wave of invites have been invited to a select group of users (👀 @GigaBuds_) to beta test the Desktop Node ahead of its full release. By joining the network via the Desktop Node, your network score receives a multiplier of 2x. The multiplier is reflective of the fact that these nodes have better uptime, improved latency, and priority routing in the network. With user privacy always being our top priority, we’ve gone through a 3 month audit process to ensure that the Grass Desktop Node is compliant with all major anti-virus providers. Grass’s mission has always been user-first. For decades, middleware companies have been abusing their privileges by sneaking software into free applications and then selling your bandwidth to large corporations who need to scrape the web. It’s time to take back control.

Tomorrow, Epoch 7 - the final epoch of the Grass Closed Beta - will begin. Our end game is to build the world’s only open internet scale web crawl and turn the entire public web into a knowledge graph that can be used by any AI model. This matters because only two companies in the world are capable of crawling the entire web, and they capture all of the value accrued by AI development. Since launching Grass, we've welcomed two million users into the network, and this is just the beginning. As the network grows, its capabilities expand exponentially. Imagine the transformative power of Grass with 100 million nodes. The most important feature of Grass that was verified during closed beta is its ability to access 100% of the public web. With the release of UpVoteWeb on @huggingface, Grass became the first network to build and open source the largest dataset of its kind — ten times larger than the next. Just as companies in the past 20 years changed how we interact with the web, Grass will change who owns the web. Let’s take back control of the internet.

AI is the real Web3. Web 2.0 gave us centralization, bias, and data exploitation. Where do we see these trends today? That’s right: AI. Grass exists to create an alternative. A free and open version of the next stage of the internet. We are laying the foundation for another world while we still have time.
Andrej@0xdrej

Crypto is not Web3 - but it can save it. Why AI is the next iteration of the internet and crypto is a critical part of keeping it free. The internet began as a place of total freedom, where web 1.0 users existed completely outside of society’s restrictions. Anyone could post a website, and there was virtually no oversight of what got posted. It was a place where you could look for anything. Now it’s a place where things look for you. What happened? Two things: smartphones and social media. As billions of people rushed in over the past ten years, they’ve joined a fundamentally different internet. Today, the web no longer takes place on unique URLs. It takes place on centralized platforms, and it takes place on apps. This happened over the course of several years, but if you blinked you would’ve missed it. So far, the consequences have been dismal. Despite its early promises, more users spending more hours on fewer platforms has ultimately meant one thing: much more data in much fewer places. This data translated into an unprecedented amount of power, and the platforms that promised to fix the world began abusing it. What followed was a small group of digital actors getting wholesale access to our digital lives. They use our data for profit while maintaining a system of total surveillance and programmed content. Centralized companies now control what we see and observe what we do, and the egalitarian utopia that was promised to us has turned into a digital feudal state. So ask yourself: If Web 2.0 happened when the internet became more closed off, when free apps were offered to users whose data was then captured and sold – what is the next evolution of these trends? It’s not crypto. It’s AI. AI in its current state is the ultimate example of a closed internet built on extracted data. And whether we like it or not, Web3 began the moment AI had its iPhone moment two years ago. It began with the release of ChatGPT. The difference is, the apps of Web 2.0 controlled our view of the internet. Web3 is on track to control our perception of reality itself. There are less than five companies in the world right now who can achieve an internet scale web crawl. These companies basically control the internet, and by transitivity, the future of AI development. Today, Grass has over 2 million users. At its current scale, Grass can scrape enough data for fine-tuning specific AI models or informing certain types of real-time inference. When it reaches 25 million users, it will be able to scrape a pre-training corpus large enough to train ChatGPT from scratch on a weekly basis. Grass's vision extends beyond merely scraping data for model training; we want to fundamentally transform the internet. With 100 million users, Grass will be large enough to achieve an internet-scale web crawl, owned and controlled by its users. If we can give users control of the rails by which data itself is acquired for AI, we can begin to seize power back from the small handful of companies who took over during Web 2.0. We stand at a pivotal time in history. Web2 did not need (or necessarily want) to become evil; we just didn’t have the tools to prevent it. The system at the time fell victim of the market incentives that compelled it to act nefariously. Before the advent of blockchain coordination mechanisms, it was impossible to include users in the equation. We have a chance to do things properly this time.

In Case You Missed It:   Yesterday, we announced that users can now link Solana wallet addresses to their Grass accounts. For a few reasons, this is a momentous occasion not just for Grass, but for the entire AI industry. Our plan has always been to completely revolutionize the development of artificial intelligence, and here’s why this is so important:   As you know, Grass is a network that provides AI data to developers. When data is scraped from the web, it has to be routed through the internet connection of a specific node. If you’re a Grass user, this is what you’ve been doing all along. Now, when you connect your wallet on the dashboard, a Solana address will be linked to your particular node ID.   So why does that matter?   1. This will allow people to be rewarded proportionate to the amount of resources they've contributed to the network   One thing the upcoming Grass infrastructure will be able to do is keep track of which node scrapes which data from the web. Then, whenever this data is used in AI inference or training, there will be a proven lineage that links scraping actions to datasets. When we have a wallet address associated with each node, we’re then able to distribute the value of AI back to the exact node that provided the data.   This is a step towards a fully decentralized method of tracking resource usage. These records are beyond the ability of any company to manipulate or obscure, and that means a more fair and equitable AI where individual people can actually earn a stake.   And considering you're already providing companies with these resources free of charge (1), the only difference is you'll actually be rewarded for it.   2. It will lay the groundwork for viewing the provenance of all AI training data, bringing a level of transparency to AI that has never before been possible   With this functionality in place, the network won’t just be keeping track of which node scraped which dataset. It will also keep track of the specific origin of the dataset itself - where exactly the data came from on the web. The moment a dataset is scraped, the network will automatically compile metadata about its origin along with the node that scraped it, to be batched and settled on-chain - a permanent record of data provenance. This is a capability that no other data provisioning solution has ever had, and we believe it is the missing link in solving the biggest problems facing AI today.   3. This will make AI less opaque and biased, while simultaneously making it less concentrated in the hands of the few   Think of the biggest problems currently affecting AI. For developers, there’s no way to be sure a dataset you’re using hasn’t been poisoned, short of going back and scraping it yourself to make sure. For users, there’s no way to tell whether an agent you’re interacting with is biased, without seeing what data the developer decided to train it on. And for everyone, we run the risk of a tiny number of companies dominating AI and forming a monopoly on the most important technology of all time.   Grass is designed to solve all of these problems. When a developer can verify beyond a shadow of a doubt that a dataset came directly from the place it was supposed to come from, they no longer need to worry about data poisoning. When this information can be made public for individual models, the users who engage with them can know beyond a shadow of a doubt whether they’re being presented with legitimate information - or fake news. And most importantly, when a system is created for distributing the value of AI to the millions of people who collectively operate a network, rather than a small handful of Big Tech companies, we can all work together to make it fairer and less exploitative.   And that’s not all. In addition to the positive impact Grass is having on the acquisition of training data, it's also breaking technological barriers with the introduction of Live Context Retrieval. This refers to scraping data in real time, to provide context for LLMs at the point of inference. This is a capability currently in development that does not exist anywhere else, and we’ll be releasing more information about it soon.   We believe that a better world is possible and the future is right in front of us. There is still time to save AI, and we are committed to doing so. The mission is underway. So to all of our users, thank you for seeing the vision and thank you for touching Grass.   References:   1. ndss-symposium.org/wp-content/upl…

GM all, For certain reasons, we’re expecting a huge influx of new users soon. The network will need to be as robust as possible, so we’re introducing a handful of new products to expand its capabilities. Today we debut their new home: The GRASS APP STORE. The store will host a variety of different free apps. The first of these is the Grass Community Node, which you can download today. Up to now, you’ve all been earning through a chrome extension added to your browser. This is identical to that, with the added bonus that you can now test new features before widespread release. In return, Community Node users will receive a 1.25x network score and be rewarded accordingly. It’s a great way to boost your points without doing any extra work. And that might be a good idea right now - just saying. Again, this is one of several new products we’ll be rolling out, and the next one is right around the corner. That one will be big, and form the basis for a lot of what we have planned going forward. So stay tuned, and as always, thank you for touching Grass.
