On September 27, 1986, Cleveland, Ohio attempted to break a world record by launching nearly 1.5 million balloons as part of a fundraising event.
What began as a celebration quickly spiraled into chaos when a cold front swept through, sending the balloons back down over the city and nearby Lake Erie.
The dense cluster of balloons caused unexpected problems, including the closure of a runway at the local airport. Most significantly, the floating debris seriously disrupted a US Coast Guard search operation for two missing fishermen.
