Opulent environment at the excellent #MITS24 mutation meeting in Edinburgh, where Eszter Németh won a poster prize!

It was an honour to attend the inaugural lecture of Katalin Karikó at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. An inspirational story from a very humble person.

@paganolab @NIH Papers improve after peer review. My papers certainly do. And I have reviewed many manuscripts with fundamental methodological problems that need more than a skim read to spot.

Do papers improve after peer review? Only in a limited number of cases. Is it still worth the effort? Let’s eliminate the tyranny of peer review and publish only in BioRxiv. Is it too bold for @NIH to ask to use taxpayers’ money to perform research rather than enrich publishers?
Oded Rechavi@OdedRechavi

Papers improve after peer review. Yes, probably. But I'd like to see, as a control, whether there'll be a comparable (or bigger) improvement if the editors just told the authors "work on it for additional 2 years and then resubmit".

New family member ❤️❤️ Bruno the Hungarian Vizsla. Any puppy tips gratefully received - it’s been 15 years since we had a puppy and I appear to have banished it from my memory 🤣

@davidmasp That's because the image was not really a link, I added the title. The link is above. But many thanks!

Mismatch repair is very important to avoid mutagenesis, but how do mismatches arise? In a fresh NAR paper we show that oxygen triggers mismatches through a replicative process rather than direct DNA damage. academic.oup.com/nar/article/do…

The Nobel Prize@NobelPrize

“Ten years ago I was kicked out and forced to retire.” Our new medicine laureate Katalin Karikó (@kkariko) told us how much it means to be awarded the Nobel Prize after a scientific career that has been full of challenges. Ten years ago, Karikó was still doing all her experiments by hand but today she has been awarded the medicine prize for her research on mRNA, which led to the development of COVID-19 vaccines. Although translesion synthesis promotes base substitutions, it also protects the genome from deletions and chromosome instability

What are the main causes of spontaneous mutagenesis? Proud to present our new paper reporting that translesion synthesis (REV1) or oxidative processes (via PRIMPOL) are responsible for mutations in cultured human cells cell.com/cell-reports/f…
