No not at all. Nor am I against data centers, I was just giving a good faith argument for how it's possible for data centers to have some impact on the environment, even though the original example was literally self confessed conspiritard nonsense. IMO we need abundant cheap energy not derived from combusting fossil fuels(nuclear best suits it I think) and conscientious consciousness of the environmental impacts of industries. If a data center takes the concentration of a dangerous chemical from 10% of the safe limit to 12% I don't care and neither should you, if it takes it from 10% to 101% I do and you should too.

A great quip if you only intend to be a shitposter on twitter, but for someone fashioning themselves as the replacement for the incumbent mainstream representation for left-aligned politics(and incumbent government) it's a desperately unserious dodge. Why not seize the opportunity to forward your political positions and values in the face of a little political pushback? You're already regarded as deeply unserious as a politician for your quack positions, but apparently you're now so deeply unserious that you won't even stand for your usual horseshit?

@DreyfusJames James, sit this one out. Clearly the rainbow activists understand the offence a gay person would feel and the dislike for Ann better than an actual gay person ever could. You’re gay? What the fuck would you know until you’ve got the official rainbow lanyard?

Probably worth bearing in mind that other religions are available, whose views on homosexuality remain far more worrisome than anything she believed. She had many gay friends, who didn’t necessarily agree with her on everything, but were intelligent enough to understand that mild disapproval, due to her religious convictions, was NOT a barrier to years of friendship, laughter & mutual admiration.

The glee with which I've seen people react to these sorts of horror stories is enormously disappointing. I think it's fundamentally wrong to act like charity, debateably overextended or incautious/dismissive of risks perhaps, makes the end result a kind of just punishment rather than a tragedy that ought to recalibrate our caution.

I have a totally different take. I respect her. She lived and died by her principles. She didn't lie. She wasn't sneaky. She wasn't Janus-faced. She acted on her convictions and she paid with her life.
I Meme Therefore I Am 🇺🇸@ImMeme0

That deluded fool Jamey Carney strutted around calling herself “the good American” while spitting venom at ICE agents, gobbling up every toxic lie from left-wing propagandists, cosplaying as a pro-Palestine activist, and bragging about dating a Muslim. Now she’s a dead American! Beaten to death in her own home in Ireland by the very kind of third-world invader she championed. Her teen daughter? Left without a mother. Let her murder be warning to every self-righteous “good American,” every virtue-signaling white activist woman across the West: Your suicidal fantasy that flooding our countries with third-world masses equals “multicultural enrichment” is not just brain-dead stupidity, it’s LETHAL. Islam is not compatible with Western civilization. Your teary-eyed pro-Islam “empathy” isn’t moral superiority, it’s suicidal treason against your own people, your own culture, and your own future. It gets you beaten to death in your bedroom while your daughter finds the body. It gets your homeland turned into a no-go warzone. This isn’t a tragedy. It’s the predictable, gruesome result of ignoring reality. Wake the fuck up before more “good Americans” end up the same way. Pray that her daughter doesn’t follow in her mother’s footsteps.

"both massive self promoters" Konstantin doesn't grant himself the political commentary equivalent accolade of being the best trader in the world or being the best inequality economist in the world. What honest assessment of Konstantin could amount to being the "sycophantic media wing of reform"?

@coldxman "a just result by unjust means" is also an apt description of the attitude behind the January 6th debacle. I have a feeling that unjust means to the benefit of trump's whims is just how he operates.

The announcers (all former pros) thought it was a bad call. I think that's an important detail –– and missing from the coverage I've seen Is it better to get a just result via a corrupt process or an unjust result via a morally pure process? I would say the former.

Trump on Balogun: "I saw the play, and I'm a person that loves sports ... that wasn't a foul. That wasn't even an infraction ... this referee, who is a little bit suspect if you check his past. He made a call that nobody could believe ... he's our best player, or one of our best players. And he gave him a red card. I didn't know what that meant ... yes, I asked for a review by FIFA."

I admit to finding Mehdi Hasan’s US career arc fascinating. Preening, supercilious, bottomlessly entitled, perpetually aggrieved, and extremely unlikeable, I don’t think that any contemporary media figure’s personality and personal conduct do a better job of refuting the very ideas the same ideas that they are trying to promote.

They didn't merely check that their work looked ok on a CRT, LCD didn't start to become mainstream until the end of the 90s. In the 80s through mid 90s, for 99% of people, if you were doing any work involving a screen that screen was a CRT. CRTs stuck around much longer than people realise engadget.com/2008-02-19-wor…

Nobody is saying the option of streamed games shouldn't exist, they are antagonistic to the "you will own nothing" memes potentially coming to fruition, where they are priced out of the model of consumption they prefer that also grants them a large degree of freedom in terms of the entire world of use cases for personal computing. And the upside of maximal utilisation is easily something that steps over into availability during peak hours being limited and possibly in competition with other use cases that potentially don't want to cede that compute time to people's evening video games, which means that differing use cases for those compute hours is in competition and if the gaming is to win out it has to pay a premium which will be passed on to the customer and then the value proposition starts to change. 90/year will eventually come with awful caveats and limitations or it will turn into 120/year or 180/year or buying "tokens" that deplete at different rates depending on the time of day.

Imagine being a poor college student. You want to play games with your friends. You don't otherwise have any hardware yet. You can either: A. Spend thousands of dollars on a PC B. Spend (nearly) a thousand dollars on a console + games C. Spend ~$90 to cloud stream games for a year. Which option makes the most economic sense?

you’ll get mad at me for saying this…but cloud gaming is so obviously more economically efficient than physical hardware I think it’s going to be the default soon. your home console / pc is idle 90%+ of the day. meanwhile, data centers targets what, 5%, maybe at worst 10% idle. every second a cloud gamer isn’t gaming, that hardware is being used for someone else, training, etc. I think there should be a new measurement, something like cost-per effective FLOP hour that takes into account the TCO + effective utilization. If a gamer spends $500 on a GPU, uses it for 3 years, but it’s only fully active ~5% of that period…the cost-per relative FLOP hour is crazy high! Meanwhile, a $50,000 datacenter GPU might have a *LOWER* cost-per FLOP hour just because the effective utilization is 90+%.

It's bad for me personally, and for friends I'd go the effort of making them something better. But even as a die hard "build your own"-er the big plus is the investment in software for a solid couch experience that I can benefit from, even if the physical product isn't for me. Good for anyone who feels like they're getting something they want, though, this just seems like an expansion of consumer choice.

The cost of travelling to Japan is already quite expensive, my wife and I spent around 1,000,000JPY on travel, accommodation, and doing what tourists do, that was even with us spending half the time in a friend's Osaka apartment! Taxation is important but at a certain point it is punitive and discouraging. For many it will be enough to put them off doing any of that spending, and the government might see their finances improve for it but the businesses servicing those tourists will simply have fewer customers.

Hot take that will get me crucified in the UK 🇬🇧💀: The NHS costs $255 billion a year. That’s more than the entire national budgets of Egypt, Bangladesh, and Pakistan combined - three countries running health, education, defence, and everything else for 550 million people - and they’re still $40 billion short of matching what Britain spends on “free” GP appointments and hip replacements for 65 million. It’s not a health service. It’s a bureaucratic Godzilla in a hospital gown, devouring the economy one billion at a time. The UK can’t tax its way out of this. You can squeeze the rich until they flee (they already are), hike taxes until no one bothers earning (getting there), and the beast will still be hungry next fiscal year, asking for another 5%. The NHS isn’t free. It’s just invoiced to your grandchildren. Break it up. Privatise it. Sell it off in pieces over 10 years. Use the proceeds to pay down the debt before it hits 200% of GDP and Britain becomes a museum of its former self. “But healthcare is a right!” Sure. So is food … and Tesco seems to manage without a £200 billion state bureaucracy and an 18-month waiting list for a sandwich!
