In this week’s #DUTSportsImpact, we shine the spotlight on Sthandile Msomi ⚽, a dynamic footballer and Architecture student whose journey is defined by resilience, discipline, and a relentless drive to grow both on and off the field. Born in Ixopo, Sthandile’s passion for football was evident from an early age, rooted in her natural talent and love for the game. “I would say it is the talent I have for football compared to other sports,” she reflects. Since joining the DUT Football Club in 2025, she has consistently demonstrated her ability to balance the demands of student life with the intensity of competitive sport. Her presence on the field is marked by focus, composure, and a strong work ethic. Operating as a defensive midfielder, Sthandile is the engine of the team, breaking down opposition play, shielding the defence, and driving transitions from defence to attack. Her role demands tactical intelligence, sharp decision-making, and the ability to read the game under pressure, making her a vital link in the team’s structure. Beyond the pitch, football has played a key role in shaping her character. It has strengthened her discipline, resilience, and teamwork, qualities that continue to influence both her academic and personal growth. As a Bachelor of the Built Environment in Architecture student, Sthandile remains committed to building a meaningful future, proving that excellence in sport and academics can go hand in hand. Reflecting on her decision to join DUT, she shares; “I chose DUT because of the opportunities it offers both academically and in sport. It allows me to grow in my career while continuing to play the sport I love.” Speaking about her experience on campus, she adds; “My campus life has been a great experience. I have been able to meet new people, learn different things, and grow both personally and academically.” She continues to seize every opportunity to elevate her game, contribute to her team, and represent DUT with pride. Her journey reflects the core values of DUT’s #ENVISION2030 strategy, respect, accountability, and commitment. Looking ahead, Sthandile is focused on reaching new heights, both as a footballer and as a student, with the ambition to make a lasting impact in her team and her community. #ProudlyDUT #StudentSuccess #IamDUT #CreativeDistinctiveImpactful

This week, our #ManCrushMonday is Benjamin Aye Simon. A PhD student in Public Health (Epidemiology) in the Faculty of Health Sciences and President of the International Students Organisation (ISO) at the Durban University of Technology, Simon is a dedicated researcher, leader and advocate for international students. Originally from Dutse Kagoro (Afan Ogworok) in Nigeria, his journey from a small and relatively isolated community to pursuing advanced research in South Africa reflects perseverance, resilience and a deep belief in the power of education to transform lives. Inspired by witnessing communities affected by poverty, limited healthcare access and preventable illnesses, Simon developed a strong passion for public health and epidemiology. His master’s research explored how maternal socioeconomic factors influence acceptable diets among children under five in South Africa. His current PhD research focuses on the epidemiology and complications of gestational diabetes, with a focus on improving maternal and child health across Africa. Beyond academia, Simon plays a key leadership role as President of ISO, helping international students adapt to life in South Africa through orientation programmes, networking opportunities and social initiatives that build a sense of community. Through both his research and leadership, Simon continues to make a meaningful impact in advancing knowledge, supporting fellow students and strengthening communities. We wish Benjamin Aye Simon all the best as he continues his PhD journey and leadership at DUT. 🎓📚✨ #ManCrushMonday #DUTProud #ENVISION2030 #CreativeDistinctiveImpactful

Durban University of Technology was honoured to host members of the KwaZulu-Natal Diplomatic Corps at the DUT Hotel School for purposeful dialogue and international engagement. We extend our sincere appreciation to Mr Alain Pierre Gringoire - Dean of the Diplomatic Corps of KwaZulu-Natal and Honorary Consul of Belgium for his leadership in bringing together such a distinguished gathering, and to Dr Lavern Samuels, Director of International Education & Partnerships (IEP), for presenting DUT's internationalisation vision with clarity and purpose. Representatives from across the diplomatic community joined DUT leadership and faculty for a conversation oriented toward shared priorities - spanning mobility, scholarships, collaborative qualifications, joint funding opportunities, and the strengthening of formal partnership channels. This engagement is consistent with DUT's ENVISION2030 commitment to glocal collaboration, connecting our 35 000+ students to the world, and the world to Durban. We look forward to the conversations ahead. #DUT #ENVISION2030 #InternationalEducationAndPartnerships #DiplomacyAndEducation #GlocalCollaboration #KwaZuluNatal #InternationalisationAtHome #HigherEducation #CreativeDistinctiveImpactful
