The melting of glaciers in Central Asia is altering long-term water balances, affecting agriculture, energy production, and the resilience of regional communities. The 4th High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action, “Water for Sustainable Development” (2018-2028) will be held on May 25-28, 2026, in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The conference will be an important platform for governments, international organizations, scientists, youth, and civil society to accelerate action towards achieving SDG 6 — “Clean Water and Sanitation for All” and other internationally agreed water-related goals and targets, including those contained in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Hydropower and Sustainable Development Hydropower is a key source of renewable energy and plays a significant role in ensuring the energy security of many countries. At the same time, the development of hydropower requires careful consideration of ecosystem impacts, the interests of local communities, and the effective management of reservoirs. In Dushanbe, participants will discuss the role of sustainable hydropower in achieving climate targets and the Sustainable Development Goals. Approaches that enable the integration of renewable energy development with ecosystem conservation, as well as the equitable distribution of benefits among countries and regions, will be examined.

Meeting with Co-Organizers and Co-Chairs of the UN 2026 Water Conference On 18 March 2026 in New York, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, Mr. Sirojiddin Muhriddin, held a meeting with the co-organizers of the 2026 United Nations Water Conference and the Co-Chairs of its Interactive Dialogues. During the conversation, Minister Muhriddin emphasized the pivotal role of the Co-Chairs, noting that their leadership will be essential in steering substantive and balanced discussions, as well as in ensuring that the outcomes of the Conference adequately reflect the priorities and expectations of Member States and all relevant stakeholders. He also highlighted the significance of the initiatives put forward by the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, His Excellency Emomali Rahmon, aimed at advancing the global water agenda. In this context, particular attention was given to the preparations for the Fourth Dushanbe Water Conference, scheduled for 25–28 May 2026, and participants were invited to take an active part in its work and contribute to its outcomes. For their part, the co-organizers of the 2026 United Nations Water Conference and the Co-Chairs of the Interactive Dialogues, including United Nations Under-Secretary-General Mr. Li Junhua, Co-Chair of the Dushanbe Water Conference, expressed their support for Tajikistan’s initiatives and reaffirmed their readiness to further strengthen cooperation in the field of sustainable water resources management.

Briefing on the Preparatory Process for the High-Level International Conference On March 18, 2026, a briefing was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affair of the Republic of Tajikistan with participation of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, Head of the Secretariat of the 4th High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development” 2018–2028 Sanoi Boyzoda. During the event, it was noted that the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan continues active preparations for the Conference, which will be held on 25–28 May, 2026, in Dushanbe. It was noted that the purpose of this Conference is to strengthen cooperation, create favorable conditions for implementing concrete actions to address global water-related challenges, and support the achievement of water-related Sustainable Development Goals and the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development.” The Conference also serves as a key event in the lead-up to the 2026 UN Water Conference and as a platform for informal consultations and discussions with stakeholders regarding the 2028 UN Water Conference to be held in Tajikistan. In this regard, the participants were provided with detailed information on the Conference programme, including thematic sessions, special panels, forums, as well as international exhibition, side and cultural events. Developing sustainable urban water infrastructure — including the modernization of networks, reduction of water losses, and implementation of water reuse systems — has become a priority for municipalities. As part of the Fourth High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development,” 2018–2028, an International Exhibition will also showcase solutions and exhibits in the field of sustainable water infrastructure. The main goal of the exhibition is to raise global awareness of the measures being undertaken and the progress achieved in implementing the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development” by demonstrating cutting-edge knowledge, best practices, and scientific achievements in the water sector. Digital Technologies and #SmartWater: A New Stage in #WaterResourcesManagement The rapid advancement of digital technologies — from remote sensing systems and satellite observation to big data analytics and artificial intelligence — is shaping a fundamentally new model of water resources management. The integration of real-time sensors, digital platforms, and predictive analytics enables governments and water authorities to shift from reactive responses to proactive, science-based decision-making. “Smart” solutions provide more accurate assessments of surface and groundwater reserves, early warning of droughts and floods, reduced losses in water supply systems, improved energy efficiency, and greater transparency in resource allocation. Digitalization also strengthens trust among countries sharing transboundary basins through data exchange and joint monitoring. #GEO7: A #GlobalChoice for a #SustainableFuture for #People & the #Planet The #UnitedNations Environment Programme (#UNEP) presented its report #GlobalEnvironmentOutlook – Seventh Edition: The Future We Choose (#GEO7) at the session of the United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi. The report notes that ongoing environmental degradation results in millions of deaths each year and causes economic losses amounting to trillions of dollars. GEO-7 demonstrates that transitioning to a stable climate, healthy ecosystems, and reduced pollution could generate trillions of dollars in additional global GDP annually, prevent premature deaths, and reduce hunger and poverty. The report places special emphasis on the critical role of freshwater. Increasing pressure on water resources threatens sustainable development and may exacerbate water, food, and social crises, particularly in vulnerable regions. The authors call for systemic transformations in the economy, energy, food systems, waste management, and environmental governance. Coordinated action by governments, businesses, and society could generate up to USD 20 trillion in annual global benefits by 2070.
