China News 中国新闻网@Echinanews

"#Culturalgenocide" in #Xinjiang? Central Asian journalists visited and saw something very different. In Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, reporters from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and beyond toured villages in Bole and Wenquan counties. They watched Uighur and Mongolian dances, tried traditional steps with locals, visited embroidery workshops, and even attended a Kazakh wedding demonstration. In one village, they saw locals running a boutique guesthouse built entirely in ethnic style, a deliberate effort, they were told, to keep traditions alive and share them with visitors. "The care with which locals protect and promote their own culture is extraordinary," said Akmal Talibov from Tajikistan's ASAL News. "The government supports their values and uniqueness. You see it in the architecture, the music, the crafts." Mukhammad Obidov, chief editor of the Uzbekistan National News Agency, who has visited Xinjiang multiple times, put it bluntly: "Every time I come to China, I'm struck by how the government treats all ethnic groups as equals, Han, Uygur, Mongolian, Kazakh. Everyone is Chinese. There is no 'cultural genocide' here." The reality, in other words, looked nothing like the accusation. →bit.ly/3TtbiRG
