I wake up with a jolt, glance at the wall clock, and see 7:45 AM.
Chai. Pure, unadulterated panic. I fly out of bed like a man avoiding a query, sprint to the bathroom, and brush my teeth with pure aggression.
While spitting foam, I'm already constructing the lie for the branch manager.
I rush back, grab my phone to quickly send in an excuse, only to see the lock screen staring back at me calmly:
Sunday.
I just dropped on the bed like a sack of garri. My village people almost got me.

On the morning of August 4th, 2021, I spoke with my mum… laughed, probably complained about something small, said goodbye the way you do when you think there’ll be a next time.
By the time I closed from work that evening, there was no one to come home to. She was gone. And I didn’t know that morning would be the last time I’d ever hear her voice.
Just like that, the last words we shared became the last words we’d ever share. I didn’t know I was saying goodbye. I didn’t know to hold on tighter. I just… didn’t know.
