Check the quoted conversation for context, but even I’ve got confirmation now from my OG cinema friend source that the IMAX DCP of #TheOdyssey is indeed… having an extremely low size… 122GB… for the entire movie… i.e., just about 101mbps for 4K. Please understand that JPEG2000 is a codec from 2000 and it NEEDS high bitrate to maintain a sharp quality (unlike HEVC that looks great in 100mbps). Even-though I trust my knowledge and research, but to be sure, I’ve also taken opinion from people in the cinema tech industry and confirmed that yes, this is an extremely disappointing bitrate for a 4K DCP, especially IMAX! A tech expert friend who attended the fan screening noted that the movie was noticeably softer than Oppenheimer in IMAX. Whatever the decision behind this is, it’s highly concerning. I will be not visiting IMAXs going forward. The tech nerd in me cannot come to terms with what is happening. The standard 4K DCP (which will play in EPIQ, PXL, PCX, etc) will play the 297 GB DCP that has an excellent bitrate of 246.3 mbps that is almost touching the ceiling of 250 mbps.

The 1.90:1 IMAX DCP is practically almost identical to a 1.85:1 flat DCP to the human eye… a difference so minor it took me 5 years to notice that Select City Walk IMAX is actually 1.85:1 instead of 1.90:1. Do not visit an IMAX for #TheOdyssey just for a minuscule extra image… prioritise better projectors, picture quality and immersiveness. Because the movie was shot entirely on IMAX film, the DMR process is skipped. The footage is scanned and projected with little to no enhancement, which is also true for normal DCPs. Furthermore, both formats share a strict bitrate ceiling of around 250 Mbps. With identical source scans and bitrates, the baseline picture quality is almost exactly the same. If an IMAX Laser XT or Cola is the only good 4K projector in your area (like Ahmedabad or Delhi), it is an acceptable choice. Otherwise, superior flat formats easily outclass it. • EPIQ: Features projector systems that are explicitly better than IMAX XT. (eg: like EPIQ is a better choice in Pune than Wakad IMAX) • Flat Dolby Cinema: Delivers 3 to 4 times better projector quality than IMAX, running much higher bitrates at 400 or 500 Mbps. • HDR by Barco: Provides vastly superior quality driven by deep blacks, extremely high contrast, and brightness. • PCX: Utilizes dual-laser projectors that are far more expensive than IMAX XT, offering a much bigger screen and venue for a better experience in every way. The Bottom Line: If available, prefer a flat venue paired with a superior projector over an IMAX.

@Nazeer110496 @heisenberg_2110 Nice point, but OLEDs and DTS-HD MA capable 5.1 systems are still expensive. He can upgrade later. For now, a good pair of stereo headphones with a DAC is a great way to enjoy the lossless quality of DTS-HD MA through a stereo downmix, even if the surround effect is sacrificed.

@heisenberg_2110 @DaBat_Mann Probably watching it on lower quality, because majority of the laptops don't support HDR, unless gaming OLED one's. You're not getting 5.1 DTS-HD MA. Watch it on a 4K TV with a decent soundbar to have good experience
