“NKOYO” Nkoyo is a piece that visibly embodies beauty, and is a statement to prime. She wears a strong green hue, that signifies fertility (holding hope for better to come/ fruitful harvest in view), an unpredictable gaze, lips that give charm, and a stretched out neck to stay her striking poise (elegantly so). The name “Nkoyo”, is a feminine traditional name from the Efik tribe of Nigeria, that means “born at night”; reflective of the time in which this piece was conceived. Nkoyo is the first, off a new collection/ body of works I’m currently exploring in the course of my portraits journey... A collection I’ve come to name by merger as CarTraits (Car Portraits). A collection built around nostalgic transition and hope, that features a fusion of human faces into car heads, in a bid to connect two worlds of my being (childhood realities, and present experiences/ expectations)... Whether it’s in the studio, art workshops, personal practice, or commissions; I’ve given my portraits journey quite many experiences/ exercises… This is one of those where I take it outside, so If my shouts from the walls of my studio were not loud enough, or my presence not as felt, I’m sure you wouldn’t deny it now, outside. More importantly, this exercise will be evangelistic… conscious, purpose driven, and consistent, and I’m driving this very exercise, through the theme: “ARTention”, by DaGaius, because I’m trying to get yours. I also know your attention is not cheap, reason I’m paying for it with value, telling hue stories with my brush. [A popular casual phrase goes: “even if you have a pencil, you can’t draw my attention”… I believe you’re right, because I need more than a pencil to probably convince you otherwise, and that’s why my brushes have come out to play].
