Broke/falsely accused….imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit with an eighth grade education and a pencil changed the course of American history…
Xagreat@Xagreat001

In 1961, a man with an 8th-grade education picked up a pencil in his prison cell and changed American history. Clarence Earl Gideon was a 51-year-old drifter with gray hair, weathered skin, and a lifetime of hard luck. On August 4, 1961, he stood accused in a Florida courtroom of breaking into the Bay Harbor Pool Room. The evidence was razor-thin—one witness claimed he saw Gideon leaving around 5:30 a.m. with coins in his pocket. About $5 in change, beer, and soda were missing. Gideon swore he was innocent. Too poor for a lawyer, he asked the judge to appoint one. The judge refused—Florida law allowed counsel only in death penalty cases. Gideon defended himself but was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison. In his cell, Gideon studied law books, learned about the Sixth Amendment’s right to counsel and the Fourteenth Amendment’s due process guarantee. He filed a handwritten petition in pencil on prison stationery to the U.S. Supreme Court. It reached them in January 1962. The Court agreed to hear his case and appointed top lawyer Abe Fortas. On March 18, 1963, in a unanimous 9-0 decision (*Gideon v. Wainwright*), the Supreme Court ruled that the right to counsel is fundamental to a fair trial and applies to the states. Indigent defendants facing serious charges must receive a lawyer. At his retrial with skilled counsel, the key witness was discredited. The jury acquitted Gideon after just one hour. He walked free after more than two years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Gideon’s courage transformed American justice. Thousands of convictions were reviewed, public defender systems expanded, and the principle was cemented: justice should not depend on wealth. One ordinary man’s pencil forever changed the system.

I’m tired of the Senate’s evergreen excuse for inaction: “We don’t have 60 votes.” There are ways around the 60-vote cloture standard. It’s time to start using them. And stop disingenuously characterizing any refusal to do so as virtuous or conservative. Share if you agree.

Found only in the Galápagos, marine iguanas are the world’s only sea-diving lizards. When in the water, their blood circulation is reduced, with a heart rate of ~30 bpm vs 100 bpm on land, allowing them to better conserve their warmth.

There are about 60 members of the House who are black — a record. Many are elected from plurality white districts. America is NOT an inherently racist country, but it IS inherently racist to draw lines & divide people up by race. The Supreme Court fixed it.

I just found out that in 2015, the Los Angeles SPCA gave their annual National Hero Dog award to a tabby cat named Tara. Yes, you read that right, a cat was given a dog award. It remains the first and only time a feline has ever won the title. A year earlier in Bakersfield, USA, four-year-old Jeremy Triantafilo was riding a bicycle in his driveway when a neighbor's dog escaped and went after him. The animal grabbed the boy by the leg and started pulling him down the pavement. Before anyone else could react, Tara sprinted across the yard and body-slammed the much larger canine. She chased the intruder down the street to make sure it was gone, then immediately ran straight back to check on the four-year-old.

Staff at a Marine Research Center couldn't figure out why Tank 14's filtration kept failing every Monday. The system would be offline by morning, then somehow running again by noon. Security footage finally caught it. A giant Pacific octopus named Hendrix had been unscrewing his own tank's outflow valve, squeezing through the gap into the maintenance corridor, and tightening a loose coupling on the neighboring seahorse exhibit - which had been leaking since 3 months. He did it six Mondays in a row. Same sequence every time. The marine biologist who reviewed the footage said Hendrix had essentially taught himself basic plumbing. They gave him a PVC puzzle toy as enrichment. He disassembled it in nine minutes.

SEN. JOHN KENNEDY unloads, saying the pressure on Iran is squeezing their oil lifeline hard, with exports stalled and production risks mounting if wells shut down. That’s the leverage. Keep it tight a few more weeks and something has to give. This is economic pressure at full force.
