MEMORY: 21st May 1991, a day I will never forget. I was covering the general elections in steaming Vidarbha for @timesofindia and had reported on a Rajiv Gandhi rally where the mood suggested both he and the Congress were on the comeback trail. Back in Mumbai after an exhausting train journey from Nagpur, I put the phone off the hook (this was pre-mobile India!) and went to sleep. Next morning, the screaming headline stunned me: Rajiv Gandhi assassinated in Sriperumbudur. I still remember my editor Darryl D’Monte yelling at me: “How could you switch off the phone? We wanted to send you to the spot to report !” Since that day, I’ve never switched my phone off. I met Rajiv ji only once: he was in the opposition at the time. What stayed with me was his warmth towards a young reporter: no airs, no hostility, just an easy smile and gentle manner. And yes, a willingness to answer all our questions! It was an informal press gathering at the CCI organised by the late Murli Deora. There was an innate DECENCY about him that was striking. History remembers leaders in many ways. But sometimes, nearly 35 years later, I still wonder how differently India may have evolved had that one tragic night never happened. 🙏

After over 64 days of hearings, the court declared the mazar linked to Shamsuddin is an illegal encroachment on reserved forest land and ordered its eviction. According to the Forest Department, the land has been recorded as reserved forest in official records dating back to 1916, 1939, and 1946. The mazar side claimed the structure to be 800 years old, but couldn’t provide documents.

This is the man behind heroic rescue operation in #Gulmarg, #Kashmir. He & his battalion became the saviours of hundreds of stranded tourists in Gulmarg. Even in a tense and frightening situation, he calmly reassured everyone with his words: @ajaykraina @col_chaubey @major_pawan

Abhijit Dipke moves to the Delhi High Court with the same team that helped Nimo Aka Sharma when he tweeted against the Indian Army.
