Mere analogy or correspondence does not make a biblical type. Biblical types are (1) textually rooted, being indicated by the grammar, literary structure, similar and repeated words and phrases, etc. of the biblical authors. They contain (2) historical correspondence. They are (3) prospective, or prophetic, and thus inherently eschatological. They always contain (4) an element of escalation. And they're (5) covenantal, being molded by the structures of the covenant they're related to. Disconnecting types from these various features leads you into the world of the Papists, where you make Mary the anti-type of the ark of the covenant and create silly graphics portraying deacons as Levites.

Important: "Baptists did not always agree how to promote the nation's virtue . . . All agreed that true religion was necessary for the sake of society but not all agreed how piety should exert itself in public affairs." - Menikoff I wonder if "all agree that true religion is necessary for the sake of society" today.

Henry Keeling on "The Influence of Religion on the Laws of Nations" (1828): "The sentiments which we have endeavoured in this article to support, have simply been an expansion of the thought, that the interests of the republic can be secured only by infusing true religion into all the veins and arteries of the state.—We do not mean as a matter of state patronage—but let its spirit ascend all our mountains, and go down into all our vallies, and reign in the bosoms of our senators, and statesmen; in our colleges, and schools; in every association, and at every fire side." Quoted in "Politics and Piety" by Aaron Menikoff

Listening to the Shepherds Conference Q&A, Piper mentioned asking T4G speakers when they came to believe in limited atonement. Got me thinking about the same. If you believe in limited atonement, when were you convinced? For me it was around 2009. While in Bible college. Read John Owen’s The Death of Death in the Death of Christ. Sealed it.

“Although [Henry Jessey’s, ‘A Storehouse of Provision’] addressed a wide variety of specific concerns, a common thread linking many of them together was the worry that some of the baptistic congregationalists with whom Jessey was associated had become far too concerned with peripheral issues.” - Matthew Bingham The more things change, the more they stay the same…

The fulfillment of promises concerning Israel are far, far more grand than dispensationalism allows.

That a sound, Christian theologian has said some counter-cultural thing in the past does not make it either sound or good. Critical, yet charitable, engagement with voices from the past is still necessary.
