As part of our 10-year tribute to the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice on July 7, 2016, Chief Daniel Comeaux and DART Police Chief Charles Cato received memorial plaques from “Hollywood” Henry Morris, founder of Support Our Shields. Support Our Shields uses creative media to share how police officers positively impact their communities, and present memorial plaques to departments when officers are killed in the line of duty. Mr. Morris traveled from Florida to present these plaques, and we are grateful for the kind words and gestures from those at home in Dallas and across the United States.

On July 8, 2026, at approximately 3:52 p.m., Dallas Police responded to an assist officer with ambulance call in the 6200 block of northbound Marvin D Love Freeway. The preliminary investigation determined that an officer on a traffic stop was injured when another vehicle struck the officer’s squad car while the officer was standing next to it. The officer was transported to the hospital for precautionary evaluation. The driver of the vehicle that struck the squad car was also transported to the hospital by Dallas Fire-Rescue. The ongoing investigation will be documented under case number 099403-2026. “We are grateful our officer does not appear to have suffered serious injuries and was transported to the hospital out of an abundance of caution,” said Chief of Police Daniel Comeaux. “The safety of our officers is always our highest priority, and we appreciate the quick response of first responders and the support of our community.”

From Friday, July 3 through 6 a.m. Monday, July 6, the Dallas Police Department received 18,654 calls to 9-1-1, including 297 calls dispatched for reports of fireworks and 125 calls dispatched for random gunfire. Compared to 2025, we received fewer calls to 9-1-1 which kept officers available to quickly respond to higher priority calls. "We're encouraged by the decrease in random gunfire calls this Fourth of July weekend," said Chief of Police Daniel Comeaux. "I believe it reflects the impact of a consistent message we've been sharing over the past year that celebratory (random) gunfire is dangerous, illegal, and completely preventable. It also reflects the hard work of our officers, who increased traffic enforcement and maintained a strong presence throughout the holiday weekend to help keep our streets and neighborhoods safe. Education and enforcement go hand in hand, and while we're pleased to see this progress, our work isn't done. We'll continue reminding our community that every bullet fired into the air comes back down, and every decision to celebrate responsibly helps protect a life."

The well-being of the Dallas community is not something that’s handled by a single agency. It takes a collaborative effort from multiple teams and organizations working side-by-side to ensure every person’s safety. Among the many critical incidents that have taken place in Dallas this year, we would like to highlight a joint operation between the Dallas Police Department and Dallas Fire-Rescue that saved a young woman’s life. On June 28th, at approximately 5:25 p.m., a young man heard faint cries for help coming from a wooded area behind a nearby high school. After investigating, he discovered the cries belonged to a young woman who had been trapped in a steep ravine for days by deep mud and sewage. The Dallas Police Department immediately responded, along with Dallas Fire-Rescue. In 104-degree weather, coupled with a quarter-mile of treacherous terrain, the first responders were able to safely and successfully extricate the victim and transport her to a local hospital. There, she was treated for severe dehydration, prolonged sun exposure, and other injuries sustained during her extended entrapment. The Dallas Police Department would like to sincerely thank the officers, firefighters, and paramedics who took part in this rescue operation. Your swift action and joint effort saved a young woman who was in desperate need of help. @DallasFireRes_q 👮🏽‍♀️🫱🏽‍🫲🏼👨🏻‍🚒

In a coordinated effort to curb the sale of illegal fireworks, Dallas Fire-Rescue’s Arson Division, in partnership with the Dallas Police Department’s Southeast Division, confiscated more than 1,800 pounds of fireworks and issued multiple citations across two separate operations on Saturday, July 4, 2026. The first operation took place yesterday at approximately 5:00 p.m. in the 3300 block of Elsie Faye Heggins, near the intersection of Second Avenue. Acting on investigative leads, DFR Arson investigators and DPD officers discovered a significant quantity of fireworks being sold out of a U-Haul and a van. Authorities confiscated over 1,400 pounds of illegal fireworks and issued two citations at the scene. DFR’s Inspections Division assisted in transporting the seized fireworks to a secured location. A second unrelated seizure occurred later in the evening at approximately 8:17 p.m. at 4400 Penelope St. DFR Inspectors, along with Southeast Patrol officers, conducted an enforcement action resulting in the issuance of one citation for possession of fireworks. Approximately 400 pounds of fireworks were seized. The illegal sale and possession of fireworks pose significant risks to communities, including the potential for fires, injuries, and property damage. Both incidents remain under investigation. @DallasFireRes_q 🚒🚔
