I am interested in recruiting PhD students in the area of plant ecological genetics! Potential topics include ecological genomics in Arabidopsis, morning glory, or ragweed; plant-microbe interactions; or new topics at the intersection of quant gen and pop gen.

@PoppyBest3 @fantaschy I think that will be the next plan. Right now I'm cavemanning it and running this analysis in serial on different cores instead of parallelizing (I think there's a bug in the dependency tree for how the parallelization is set up)

Building environments for genome analyses will be the end of me. Setting these up is taking longer than actually doing the analyses.

@fantaschy Unfortunately, I think conda might be the problem in this case 🥺

@DamianMicroEco Bioconda has been my savior! But whenever that’s not an option it takes forever (or not at all if your server doesn’t give you root access)

@HunterH0well You legit rebuilt a whole model system for herp ecology from scratch in 5 years in some of the toughest field conditions I can imagine. I would have lasted 5 seconds out there.

I’m happy to say that my last dissertation chapter is now out as a preprint! We find that expanding gene families are essential for context-dependency of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis. biorxiv.org/content/10.110… 1/8

A big thanks to my co-authors: the excellent undergrad (now post-Bac) Gwendolyn Pohlmann and my PhD advisor @MichelleAfkhami for all their help and for translating the jumbled mess in my head into a cohesive storyline! 8/8

We hope this inspires new ways of thinking about how context-dependent regulation evolves and helps use the evolution of complexity as a way to discover new mechanisms of context-dependent control of interactions. 7/8

Out this morning! Where we argue the need for genus-level model systems in fungi and why Suillus should be one of them, provide a primer on the genus, and how the International Suillus Consortium is addressing grand challenges to system development.  doi.org/10.1111/nph.19…
