👍 on Point. I agree 99%. But the immigration politics has changed 1-1,5 year ago, for people coming the south route. Germany hosts ~1.5 million Ukraine refugees, who have free access to health care and other social care. One day they will return. In regard of military, it’s true that Germany lowered efforts because there was no enemy close around. This has changed completely now. I think one day there will be another administration in US, people who understand that NATO is a good alliance for defense of its allies. Attacking someone and asking NATO to support, is out of the scope of NATO principles, a little bit.

What I'm trying to say is that nationally, the economic impact of force reductions will be minimal. Regionally, though, it'll be significant--local jobs, revenues, and services take a real hit. Strategically, shifting installations from Germany and the UK to Poland, Hungary, and Romania makes far more sense given today's threats. My personal view: The US should pull out of Europe completely. Most people can't name a single concrete benefit to America from keeping troops there. Europe has long been capable of defending itself--they just chose not to prioritize defense (or their most vulnerable citizens). Instead, it was mass immigration, expansive welfare, and higher taxes on the middle class. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how I see it. And as far as the capabilities of the US to wage war, most people confuse a gentle tap over the head with a full force punch...

That’s not true. Germany has a huge research base in Pharma, Car industries, IT and other technologies and US company are hijacking these people, because US companies are better I’m commercializing. I think you US guys are overestimating yourself a little bit, like your current leaders. Tariffs on European products are paid by your own people, you forget this simple but small difference.

The US does also benefit from having bases in Europe but this sort of kiss-off attitude really makes one wonder why we should bother. We put up with lopsided tariffs for decades, get sneered at while we fund pharmaceutical research and your lavish welfare states, for what?
Andrew Neil@afneil

Good luck continuing to wage your war against Iran without your German bases. Well nigh impossible. US troops aren’t in Germany to protect Germans. They’ve been there to project US power. Bye bye.

Germany is not hosting American troops. It is hosting American power. Amplifying it. Projecting it across three continents. And now, for the first time with real legal and political weight behind it, voices inside Germany are beginning to say out loud: Berlin could shut down every American base on German soil. A fiber-optic cable runs beneath Ramstein Air Base. It carries a signal from a drone pilot in Nevada to an armed aircraft over Yemen. Fraction of a second. Precision. Control. That cable sits on German soil. Cut it, and the strikes do not miss. They simply cannot happen. This week Washington punished Berlin for telling the truth about the Iran war. Five thousand troops withdrawn. A presidential post calling Germany a failure. The language of a tenant who has forgotten whose name is on the deed. Because Berlin can end all of it. Not the 5,000. All 36,436. Every soldier, every satellite dish, every signal passing through German soil on its way to a target over Africa or the Middle East. Spain tore it up. Italy said no. Germany has not moved yet. But it is thinking about it. And what it is thinking about is this: Germany holds the one thing that separates America from every other country on earth. The ability to project military force across three continents simultaneously. Take away the European staging ground and the United States becomes what every other nation in the Western Hemisphere already is. Large. Armed. And unable to reach anyone who does not live next door. open.substack.com/pub/gandalv/p/…

5k of 40k total are leaving. Peanuts. You guys should not forget, Trump is not weakening Germany with such a move, he is weakening US Airbase Ramstein. Germany gives a shit on this airbase it’s important for US Army only. Without Ramstein US army is blind and can’t act in MENA or Asia. Please go ahead with this clever self-harm 😁

Yes, you are right in this view, but it’s changing very fast in military technology. In regard of AI Europe must become more independent, it will. Same on LEO constellation communication, Europe was to passive in the last 20 years, but Trump woke up Europe. On the other hand Germany was also afraid to grow its military because of history and fear of neighboring countries. But now the things are clear, we must build our military independent from USA.

Yes, however is a lot more complex and complicated than that. Money is only a part of the equation. The ability to produce advanced weaponry is an entirely different challenge. Even within NATO the technological gap among members county is vast. US's nearest competitor is about 5 years behind. Considering the US is leading the AI race, in a few years that gap will increase significantly.

I do not completely disagree, but I repeat, the economic impact is generally speaking small, if you consider how many people live in the surrounding area. The German army s growing and will compensate some parts. I grew up close to Heidelberg 80-90s where many US soldiers lived, when they left similar Panic was spread, unnecessary. Trump forgets, the US Bases in Germany serve firstly US interests and NOT Germany‘s. That’s the mistake in his way of thinking. In case of aggression, Europeans would stand together, no matter what US Army does. Here we are already one step further. The European Armies are upgraded very fast right now. Many military technologies are coming from Europe. I think US Army overestimates their power, see Iran. The way of fighting has changed, with small drones and less super expensive rockets.

Respectfully, I believe you are mistaken. Not only did I live and work in Germany for 3 years (loved it) I was also the Chief of Budget Integration and Deputy Chief of Financial Operations for Europe and Africa (USAFE). The economic impact will be significant. Me personally in 3 years in Germany I spent over 200,000 Euros (12 years ago), most of my shopping was done off base, and I consumed 0 resources from the German government. This is a net contribution to that local economy of at least 65,000 Euros per year. Multiply that by 5,000, plus the family members, plus other indirect costs. And this is nothing in comparison with how much the DoD (DoW now I believe) spends on contracts, lease payments, local highers, etc.) I am not political , but as a US tax payer I had enough with the US paying to defend Europe. And I was born in Europe. Time to bring our troops home. I have nothing against German people (I truly love Germany and Italy) but it is time for Europe to stand on its own two feet, regardless of who the US president is.

I doubt, the economic impact will be eminent. 5k soldiers of 40k will leave most likely Ramstein, local German employees are a different story, I doubt they will reduce them, because these local Germans are needed to run the bases, no matter whether 35k or 40k are based at Ramstein. Soldiers usually consume and use super markets inside of the US Base, less outside. Therefore the impact for local economy is moderate, nothing critical. USA needs more Ramstein and local people, than vice versa. BTW, Germany and surrounding countries have understood they must plan their future without USA. Currently Trump would give a shit to help Europe or Germany. Maybe Poland and Hungary who kiss arse USA because economical hopes. Finally Trump was good to wake up Europe, to upgrade the armies to be able to defend, that’s good and ongoing with high speed. Europe should not be dependent on USA in future, UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy have agreed on this. Time will show.

@DamirK19 @RippleXrpie The economic impact will be significant. The US employs a lot of German nationals and also pays for their pensions. Personally, I believe relocating all the troops out of Germany and UK will save a lot of money. Both places are very expensive to operate out of.

That‘s a joke. Germany doesn’t need Ramstein, but US Army, otherwise you are blind and unable to act. Its hosting the biggest US Hospital outside US, drone coordination… you are stupid, if you leave you don’t weaken Germany, you are weaken yourself. We are laughing about this „clever“ moves. 😁

So geht demokratische Meinungsbildung. 2.
