Early 2024, around 6 a.m., while I was still fast asleep, I received a call that I would be leaving for Lagos in the next few minutes. It was an official assignment.
Anyone who works with government would agree with me that many assignments come without notice. Things can be very impromptu. At that time, I had not fully adapted to the system yet.
When the call came, I was still in bed. And of course, it wasn’t a same-day trip; we would be there for a few days. That meant I had to quickly pack my bags
I jumped out of bed, rushed to the bathroom, and started putting my things together.
For every trip, I usually travel with two bags. The first is my box, which contains my clothes and personal items. The second is my camera bag, my most important work tool. My camera bag also carries my laptop and other essentials I need for work.
In the middle of packing, the calls kept coming in.
“We are about to go.”
“We are already on yellow.”
In the rush of that moment, I grabbed my box and dashed out of the house. My camera bag was sitting right there on the chair, almost as if it was saying, “Pick me… don’t forget me.” But in the urgency of the moment, I didn’t even notice it.
I literally left with just my box.
We were already about 1 hour and 30 minutes into the journey when I reached out for my camera bag to take out a book to read. I always have a book in that bag.
That was the moment it hit me.
My camera bag wasn’t with me.
I had travelled all the way from Akure to Lagos as a Governor’s photographer… without my cameras 😂😂
For a moment, I didn’t even know what to do. I couldn’t cry. I couldn’t even tell anyone around me, because the first question would naturally be: How could you forget your most important bag?
Thankfully, I didn’t forget my phone. It could have been worse.
So I quickly sent a WhatsApp message to the official photographer of Lagos State, Mr. Ademola, since they were the ones hosting us. He wasn’t replying on time, and after a few minutes, I had to call him directly.
I was whispering on the phone, trying not to let anyone around me hear what had happened. The only thing I could whisper was, “Please come online… please come online.” I didn’t want anyone to know that I had forgotten my camera at home. The kind of jest they would have made of me would not have been from here 😅
Eventually, when he responded, he told me he had an extra camera I could use. It was not the brand I was used to. In fact, I had never used that brand of camera before. But at that moment, it was the only option I had.
I told him I had never used it before, but he reassured me that it wasn’t as complicated as I thought and that he would put me through.
“God bless you, sir.”
By the time we arrived at the venue in Lagos, the only person I was looking for was Mr. Demola.
I quickly collected the camera from him and did my best with it.
Interestingly, the pictures I took that day turned out to be some of the most trending photos of Mr. Governor.
Looking back now, it still feels unreal that I travelled from Akure to Lagos as a Governor's photographer without the very tool I needed to do my job.
It’s a day I will never forget.
Have you ever forgotten an important tool or item when you needed it the most?
How did you improvise?
Share your experience in the comments, I would love to hear your stories!

The people who transform their lives are the ones who take ordinary weeks seriously.
They understand that extraordinary results are built inside ordinary days.
