It all started in the mid-80s after the Thriller era, he bought The Beatles ATV catalog in August 1985. Then soon after that in 1986 The Sun started to nickname him ‘Wacko Jacko’ when a picture of him in a oxygen chamber was published in the press.
It was a racist nickname but the press never stopped after that, many rumors like the Elephant Man Bones, with his chimp Bubbles, the skin bleaching/changing appearance spread all over the medias. It really impacted his new releases like the Bad album (1987) mostly in United States. His ‘eccentric’ image overshadowed his artistic work and changed the perception of critics/medias of his music.
