Just a little life update for those who haven’t heard.
Back in January, I took my kiddo to Children’s Hospital and he was diagnosed with C. diff. Along with that came significant joint swelling and pain. They called it reactive arthritis and told us it should resolve once the infection cleared.
It didn’t.
It’s been over a month and a half. He has improved in many ways, but the joint pain hasn’t fully gone away. It comes and goes, sometimes migrating to different areas. There’s redness, swelling, and no injury causing it. A few nights ago it got so bad he woke me up multiple times crying, asking for ibuprofen or Tylenol just to get relief.
That’s when I knew we needed to go back.
We returned to Children’s on Friday. His bloodwork shows no active infection, but it does show inflammation. They aren’t sure why. We’ve been referred to rheumatology, and we’re waiting to hear from scheduling on Monday. They’re now considering that there may be an underlying autoimmune component.
The constant pain has been hard on him. It’s shown up in behavior, which makes sense. If you’re in pain all the time, you’re not going to be your happiest self. Now imagine being an extremely active 10-year-old boy who just wants to move and play. It feels unfair to him. It feels scary.
Right now, there are a lot of unknowns. I’m unable to work. We have a lot of appointments ahead.
We’re taking it one step at a time. And we would truly appreciate all the good thoughts and prayers as we navigate whatever this next chapter holds.
