Same assets. Different strategy. Completely different outcome.

Here’s the interesting part: Those same companies could have acquired the entire portfolio early on for roughly what they later paid in licensing. They didn’t.

Today, 20+ automotive companies have licensed the portfolio. 7-figure outcome.

Over time, conversations started happening. Then deals. Then momentum.

So instead of forcing a broken process, we changed the strategy entirely. We shifted from divestment → to licensing.

That’s when something became clear: The issue wasn’t the patents. It was the structure of the opportunity.

Eventually, they decided to exit. We were brought in to run a divestment process. We expected interest. There was none.

They had built a 50+ patent portfolio specifically for that market. Strong technical coverage. Real deployments in adjacent transit systems. Still nothing meaningful from major automotive players.

We took a patent portfolio to market. 20 years of work behind it. Not even a low-ball offer. Just silence.

The company had spent two decades trying to break into the automotive industry. The door never really opened.

We’ve seen strong patents get ignored for years. Same patents, different positioning → suddenly they move. Nothing changed except how the story was told.

Some of the most interesting patent deals start with failure. Not bad tech—just the wrong approach. I’ll share one this week.

A large patent portfolio ≠ a valuable one. Alignment with real-world use matters more than volume.

The hardest part of selling complex technology isn’t the tech. It’s making someone understand it in 30 seconds.

If a patent portfolio gets zero interest, it’s rarely random. There’s almost always a structural reason behind it.

Most patent portfolios don’t fail because they lack value. They fail because no one knows how to position them.
