Our politicians all say they are in favour of a Basic Income, but the All-Party Committee on Basic Income is now into Month 23 of what was supposed to be a 5-8 month process #nlpoli
While our politicians count the hundreds of billions they say are coming our way, it feels like a good time to share this paper on a Basic Income for NL. The low end for the cost that was calculated was $471 million. #nlpoli
In fairness, @GovNL is funding the Great Coastal Trail Development and I think that is a great investment. But as the East Coast Trail crumbles, it deserves at least a response from Ministers as to why it is being ignored. #nlpoli@EastCoastTrail
This should be funded in full by @GovNL
It's a clear example of a mismatch of the priorities of government and the people.
No other province would let this resource crumble instead of growing it to be the world-class attraction it could be.

Quebec seems a little more piecemeal....but they do a fair but of provincial funding for trail networks. here is one example qctonline.com/quebec-governm…#nlpoli
@LukeQuinton My understanding is that the East Coast Trail receives almost nothing from the provincial government. The small budget they have comes from memberships and fund raising.
We are talking about 20 people, and while they are 20 difficult-to-house people who need wrap-around support, this is a solvable problem. I agree to end the tent encampment as soon as there is a solution to the underlying issues of homelessness, addiction, and poverty 3/3 #nlpoli
The shelter system in NL is inadequate. The organizations and their employees are doing their best, but they are not supported by government to meet the evolving needs of the community 2/3
The way to end the tent encampment is to provide people suitable and supportive housing. Without a plan to end homelessness, the people currently sleeping in tents will still...wait for it, be sleeping in tents, just somewhere else. 1/3
I don't mind the thought of NL MHAs getting a pay raise. In fact, let's tie income support rates to MHA salaries. Every time they vote for their own wage increase, they automatically vote to increase the wages of the poorest in their districts. #nlpoli
Doubling the size of the prison wouldn’t be necessary if @GovNL reduced poverty. They are spending tens of millions on prison cells instead of on income support increases and a real poverty reduction strategy. These are policy choices.
