The ice runway in #Antarctica is warming too fast this season so we were given < 24 hours notice to get to Hobart to be ready to fly. After a big rush, we arrived in Hobart today to news that the runway is now warm to use. Now we are boomeranging back to Sydney 🪃

At air temps < 1°C the moss can be 20°C - their happy place and optimum for photosynthesis 🌿 this is what they’re used to
Any warmer and their thermal tolerance limits can be exceeded and they experience heat stress

Heatwaves are exacerbated at ground level.
What does the #Antarctic #heatwave mean for #moss ?
#CaseyStation clocked 5.6°C, almost 10°C above the average maximum air temperature for March.
But this was measured meters off the ground where nothing lives.
