The season-opening games in Tokyo in 2000 started at 5:00 AM (EST). I was in 7th grade. School started 8 AM. I got in trouble for sneaking in an actual radio and asking to go to the bathroom, where I listened to this moment in the bathroom stall. Kids with smart phones who can check @MLBTV don't understand the struggle.

March 30, 2000: Benny Agbayani lifts the @Mets to their first win of the season with a grand slam in the 11th inning against the @Cubs in Tokyo, Japan. #LGM #Mets

Cost of tickets. People pay a premium price for Opening Day tickets. The second game of the season isn’t premium pricing. Most ticket are bought months in advance. The built in weather day guarantees that if there’s a rainout, the game can be made up the second day, still as Opening Day, with people who paid top dollar months before still getting what they paid for.

The dumbest thing Major League Baseball does is schedule an off day right after Opening Day. They build all that hype, then they immediately hit pause. Lol. There's my rant.

Opening Day is here, meaning it’s now 34 seasons of following the @Mets on a day in and day out basis. Let this picture be proof that I’m the impossibly rare kid whose childhood favorite player is still on his favorite team’s payroll, too, even this many years later.

Love that Netflix was willing to experiment with some new ideas on Opening Night. Some stuff landed, some…wasn’t for me. This, with the postgame Netflix MVP jackets, I LOVED. Every MLB team should be salivating for the IG Collaboration ops with Netflix’s huge accounts.

Major League Baseball is aired in the morning for Japan. So technically they eat breakfast with it being on television. Here’s their #openingday commercial. No hyperbole, when I say this, it might be greater than any US MLB commercial I’ve seen. Well done and worth the watch for any baseball fan.

This is awesome 🥹 Rangers manager, Skip Schumaker, went out to the mound not to remove Carter Baumler, a Rule 5 pick, but to inform him that he made the Rangers Opening Day roster during a mound visit

Make sure you watch Jessi Pierce's podcast partners memorialize her. Very moving tribute from Judd, A.J. and Kirsten. It will help you understand why there was such an intense outpouring, locally and nationally, over the weekend. youtube.com/watch?v=PpdqG6…

Since I heard about the tragic passing of Jessi Pierce & her three children yesterday morning, it still hasn't registered as real to me. A house fire, how could this happen? Tragedy doesn't even begin to describe how horrific this is. I first met Jessi about 11 years ago, around the time I made a work trip to Minnesota. She and I had followed each other on Twitter for a while & like so many people in sports, wanted to use the privilege of traveling for a job to meet people who we've interacted with on Twitter in person. During that conversation, she offered me a freelance opportunity to write for RINK Magazine. Shortly thereafter, she became my editor. At home, I have lots of jerseys and swag from various stages of my career hung on my walls. Pictured here are several magazines in which I have written, with some of those RINK Magazines prominently displayed. I think I'll always think of her now, every time I walk past these. In the year that she was my editor, I got to know her well. Life topics (we're the same age), hockey debates, content strategies; you name it, we discussed it -- usually by Facebook chat. This allowed me to learn how in addition to her writing ability, she was kind. She had just plain old common sense & it stood out. Jessi was clearly good people. A few months later, after I transitioned to my role with the @GoldenKnights, I remember one of my former co-workers from the NHL league office --where I previously worked -- sending me a message on LinkedIn. He told me NHL.com needed someone to cover the @mnwild in Minnesota & asked if I knew anyone. I IMMEDIATELY said Jessi. Looking back, even without that conversation, I feel like she would've found her way to my former co-workers & NHL.com anyway. In the last 10 years, her work in that role (and other roles) proved that she was such a good fit & a hard worker. She was destined to make an impact. Over the past few years, as our careers and lives moved in different directions, we hadn't spoken often. After hearing the news this weekend, I scrolled back on our 11-year-old Facebook Messenger thread, to see when the last time we spoke was. It was April 2024. After the news of the @ArizonaCoyotes moving, she messaged to check in on me. Even though we hadn't spoken in a few years, she wanted to see if I was OK. I never could've imagined that this is the last conversation we would ever have. In the last 24 hours, I haven't stopped thinking about how many people in our careers we become close with, sometimes even briefly -- the fluid nature of sports media careers can easily pull people in different directions. I thought about all the people who I've maybe lost touch with, both personally and professionally. Not because we stopped caring. But because life got busy & our careers took different paths. If you're reading this and we've lost touch, I'd love to hear from you. Life is too short & we never know when it's going to end. My heart goes out to Jessi's family and friends.

Been trying to think of the right words, but I don’t think I can. I’ve been at a complete loss since I saw this news. I hadn’t spoken with Jessi in a few years. But back in 2015, I was badly in need of freelance work and she hooked me up to write for RINK Magazine. She became my editor, where we got to know each other incredibly well. Seems like yesterday when she called me in the summer of 2016, when she was hired by NHL.com. I’ll never forget how excited she was. The loss of her and her children is unfathomable. My heart goes out to her family.

We are heartbroken and join the State of Hockey in mourning the tragic loss of Jessi and her children. May they rest in peace 💔.
