I hit serious tiredness levels last night. Filling in little white book and I couldn't remember sex or breed of calf born at lunchtime. Knew it was mostly black, know what the other 3 are, so not a problem but .... I'd even fed it twice!

@grazyfarmer I do both as the first thing they will do is ring me so I can sleep easy knowing everything is under control. Although that might have to change tomorrow if this chest infection doesn’t do one!

What do farmers use as a snack to keep them going through the busy calving season?

#calving24 we will be ready for you. Meal prep is go, use up the 31lb turkey (note to self must sell some more bigger ones next time!)

@fordcows Better still spring calving all dry currently, all fed and scraped by 8 although I wouldn’t mind getting up to go milking this afternoon. There’s something quite satisfying working on Christmas Day even the kids get involved

I hear of so many farmers who complain about having to work all hours and never having time off. But there are things we can do to benefit lifestyle without compromising the bottom line.

It's at this time of year that I am particularly glad that we made the move to autumn block calving. It's so nice to have the peace of mind knowing there's no cows to calve and all the potential associated problems. No calves on milk to be fed. Just milking, feeding, serving.

@1noeloconnor We got everyone in on Sunday early. All gone home by 9 then no one but me back till Wednesday

I'd say they'll not be hungry the next few days. Awkward to feed this year with Christmas on Monday and we wouldn't do much work on Sundays so they have enough till Tuesday with a push in on Monday evening

@rsmithsoil And yet we grass only farmers are apparently the bad farmers on carbon footprint and sustainability according to a certain milk company. Housed cows and maize is king!!
