'Dante's is a visual imagination. It is a visual imagination in a different sense from that of a modern painter of still life: it is visual in the sense that he lived in an age in which men still saw visions.' T. S. Eliot's 'Dante' is one of my favourite essays. Recommended reading for those who love Dante's work.
T. S. Eliot Foundation@eliotfoundation

‘My favourite essay, I think, is my essay on Dante, not because I know much about Dante, but because I loved what I wrote about.’ '... genuine poetry can communicate before it is understood.’ #tseliot #dante #poetry

a very much needed reminder; especially in leisure context, what matters the most is to enjoy what we read and not fall into the trap of seeing them as merely a chore to cross off our (ever growing) reading list
Dr David Vernon@DrDavidVernon

Never really understand many of the debates over reading on here (and elsewhere). Read a little, read a lot, read hard books, read easy books, long ones or short ones. But read because you enjoy the freedom and discovery books offer, not because it's a chore.

@SketchesbyBoze Agree %1000! This is one of the reasons I’m so excited about the release of my upcoming book on Dante. The artwork in it, from the incredible Juliette Føgra, is some of the most stunning Divine Comedy art I’ve ever seen:

@EmmaRSotomayor It’s fascinating that even though we share the same scriptures (at least the Old Testament), certain biblical names are only popular among Christian parents that aren’t popular among Jewish, & vice-versa. E.g., Yael is a very popular name among Jewish parents.

Christian parents don’t name their daughters Jael, which is a crying shame to me, because it seems to be the perfect name for a tomboy who goes around climbing trees and will grow up to be a tough pioneer mama who could cut off rattlesnake heads (or Sisera’s head lol).

@athenaeumbc Let’s turn this decline around — read, and become a part of the solution (rather than the problem) of cultural literacy.
